Toni Martínez scored twice as Alavés secured a crucial 2-1 victory over Mallorca at the Estadio Mendizorrotza, and the striker’s second-half brace proved decisive in a closely contested La Liga clash.
Alaves overcame Mallorca in a competitive match on 25 April 2026, which saw the hosts recover from an early setback to secure three vital points. The result keeps Alavés’ survival hopes alive as the season enters its final stretch, while Mallorca’s defensive vulnerabilities cost them dearly against a determined home side.
Mallorca struck first when Jan Virgili opened the scoring in the 18th minute, giving the visitors an early lead at Estadio Mendizorrotza. The goal came against the run of play, with Alavés dominating possession from the opening whistle. However, the hosts remained composed and continued to methodically build their attacking play.
Alaves controlled the first half with 50% possession and created numerous chances. Their attacking intent was clear, with nine corners won while putting pressure on Mallorca’s defence. The home side’s 85% passing accuracy demonstrated their control, although they struggled to convert their superiority into goals before the break.
Jonny Otto was booked in the 26th minute for Mallorca as tempers threatened to boil over early on. The visitors adopted a defensive approach after taking the lead and inviting Alavés. This tactical setup would prove problematic as the match progressed.
The second half brought immediate drama. Toni Martínez equalized in the 56th minute, leveling the game and shifting the momentum decisively to the home side. Martinez’s clinical finishing showed why he would become the game’s standout player, firing his shots with precision when the opportunities arrived.
A few minutes later, Mallorca’s defense collapsed again. Martinez scored his second goal in the 69th minute to put Alaves ahead 2-1. The forward’s composure in front of goal proved the difference between the two sides as he converted both chances with maximum efficiency.
Manu Valjent received a yellow card for Mallorca in the 59th minute as frustration grew among the visiting players. Víctor Parada of Alaves was also booked in the 76th minute as the game heated up more and more in the final phase.
Statistically, Alavés dominated the match. They attempted a total of 15 shots compared to Mallorca’s four, four of which found the net against just two of the visitors. Alavés’ expected goals (xG) of 1.09 reflect their best chances, while Mallorca managed just 0.28 xG. Leo Román made two crucial saves to keep Mallorca in the game.
Martinez’s performance earned him a grade of 9.2, the highest of any player on the pitch. The striker converted both shots on goal, showing the clinical final that proved decisive. Virgili’s first goal for Mallorca represented his best creative opportunity of the afternoon.
The win takes Alavés to 33 points from 32 games, although they remain in 18th place in the League standings. Mallorca remain 15th with 35 points, but their defensive weaknesses against direct rivals remain a concern. Both sides face mounting pressure as the climax of the season approaches.
