The legendary opener believes that any new captain-coach partnership needs time to settle before expectations of consistent success can realistically be placed on it.
Sunil Gavaskar urges India’s new leadership team to be patient
Speaking at an interaction organized by Sony Sports, Gavaskar emphasized that building a successful team environment is a gradual process and both players and support staff need time to understand each other’s expectations. According to the former India captain, the Gambhir-Iyer partnership is still in its infancy, which makes it unfair to judge them only on the basis of the Ireland series.
“With any new relationship, it always takes a bit of time to get both the support staff and the playing staff to understand what is expected of them. It will probably take a bit (more) time and so we have to be a bit patient with that.” Gavaskar said.
His comments come at a time when India’s leadership transition has become a major topic of discussion after the surprise defeat.

Gavaskar believes international cricket is a different challenge
Gavaskar also spoke about Iyer’s credentials as a captain, noting that the Mumbai batsman has already proven his leadership ability in franchise cricket, particularly in cricket. However, he added that succeeding at the international level is a different challenge altogether, where players and captains often need time to adjust to the higher standards and increased pressure.
“Shreyas Iyer’s leadership has been proven over the years in the T20 format. We have seen him win trophies, take teams to knock-outs and finals. But again, when it comes to international cricket, it is a whole different ball game. We see that where individuals shine, it’s Ranji Trophy or First-Class level, but a step up. As for Shreyas Iyer, it was only the first two games, but let’s be patient and in England Let’s see how it goes in the next five games. Gavaskar concluded.
The next match will be against India England in the five-match T20I series, where Gambhir and Iyer will look to register their first win together and regain momentum after a disappointing Ireland tour.
