MORPET 10km, Northumberland, June 28

Ryan McLeod re-entered the field and cruised through the undulating country routes to take a two-minute victory in 32:29.

The local 41-year-old has bounced back from heart surgery over the past few years, including a 2:33:19 marathon in Chester last October, but 2026 marks a remarkable return to form.

McLeod won the Thirsk 10 and the Middlesbrough Half Marathon in 49:58 and 67:06 respectively, but this was his first outing in three months.

Earlier, a new M55 British Marathon record was set.

Belatedly, joint British-American citizen Ian Hunter set a new M55 British record at the Traverse City Marathon in Michigan on 29 May 2026 in 2:31:30 (chip 2:31:28).

This bettered the previous mark of 2:32:33 (2:32:32 chip) set by Jonathan Walton at Chester on 6 October 2024. Iain has now also been added to the Power of Ten database.

Races canceled due to heat

At least 15 road and multi-course races were either canceled or postponed, with those that advanced winning slower-than-usual times. This was due to last week’s heat, which led some to question why they were cancelled.

I pointed out that this was not the case in the 1976 heat that I trained and raced through, or the earlier heats.

The multiple British Masters champion questioned how UK cross-country runners are expected to succeed at major international championships, usually held in countries where 30C+ heat is normal, if they cannot compete at home because races have been cancelled.
