The dramatic exit comes less than two months after he originally accepted the marquee role. Friday’s announcement marks a big homecoming for one of Queensland’s most revered cricket figures as it leaves the Sydney Sixers scrambling for answers ahead of the upcoming summer.
James Hopes has left Sydney Sixers to join the Brisbane Heat and Queensland Bulls.
The decision is a major coup for Queensland Cricket, which has returned its favorite son. Hopes, 47, has a deep history in the state, having previously captained both the Bulls and the Heat during a distinguished playing career.
Although the sudden timing of his departure put the Sydney Sixers in a difficult position, the Magenta academy handled the exit with professionalism.
“While the club is disappointed with this decision, we understand the importance of this opportunity for him and his family and wish him the best.“, – Sydney Sixers said in an official statement.
Umid, currently acting as a coach Washington Liberty in Major League Cricket (MLC) in the year United States of Americaadmitted that it was a difficult decision to leave the Sixers so soon. However, it was impossible to resist the desire to return to his homeland and family.
“I struggled with the decision and am still very grateful to have been offered the Sixers role earlier this year.. However, the opportunity to enter the head coaching program with Queensland and live in Brisbane again was too good to pass up. I’ve been with Queensland Cricket since I was 14…it’s very special for me and my family to be a part of it“, – Umid explained.

A proven winner returns to the sunshine state
Hopes bring elite cricket CV back to Brisbane. As an international player, he represented Australia in 84 One Day Internationals (ODIs) between 2007 and 2011. Domestically, his leadership is legendary; he led Queensland to back-to-back Sheffield Shield finals in 2012 and 2013 and won back-to-back titles in 2012. The Ryobi Cup one-day trophies.
Since hanging up his boots in 2016, Hopes has built a solid reputation as a master tactician. He sharpened his training teeth Daniel Vettori, Darren Lehmannand Wade Seccombe before moving The Hobart Hurricanes and Tasmanian tigers in 2022.
