Reece James injury doubt for England vs Panama

Reece James looks set to miss England’s final World Cup group game against Panama after failing to train on the eve of the game.

according to Yahoo Sportsthe Football Association confirmed that James is “following his own programme” as natural full-back Tino Livramento has already been withdrawn from the squad with a calf injury.

The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes in both the 4-2 win against Croatia and the 0-0 draw with Ghana, but is reportedly suffering from a hamstring problem.

Even if James is fit, Tuchel may decide not to risk him against opponents ranked 42nd in the world, given James has already played two games in the space of a week.

Given his significant history of muscle layoffs, the coaching staff is very reluctant to take unnecessary risks with the defender’s fitness.

If James is eventually ruled out, Ezri Konsa could move from central defense, while Kobbie Mainoo is ready to deputize in midfield if Declan Rice is not fit enough to start.

Rice recently revealed that he has been dealing with nerve pain in his hamstring since the holiday period, a condition he has been managing behind the scenes for several months.

On England’s broader approach to the tournament, the German added: “There is a long way to go and nobody has won a World Cup with four goals a game and going for it. Our responsibility is to bring everything to the table.”

With England already assured of a place in the knockout rounds, Tuchel is unwilling to risk aggravating James’ injury despite needing a win to secure top spot in Group L.

England face Panama on June 28 at the New York New Jersey Stadium, with the match their last chance to finish top of the group.
