Sun Mountain’s new ‘pencil’ golf bag makes a sharp statement

When I heard Sun Mountain was making a “pencil” bag, THIS It wasn’t exactly what I expected.

But after a couple of rounds with the new one Sun Mountain x Victus Pencil Style Gold Bagit definitely has the flash and function to create a great golf bag.

Perhaps no golf bag brand has had more of a renaissance over the past couple of years than the mountain of the Sun. from a new logo, completely new lines of bags and several high-profile collaborations, Sun Mountain has come to play in the increasingly competitive golf bag space.

And this collaboration with baseball bat maker Victus Sports might be the most eye-catching yet.

Grounds

The Sun Mountain x Victus Pencil Gold Carrying Case is essentially built on Sun Mountain’s highly successful 3.5 base case platform and is styled to resemble a Ticonderoga pencil, just like Victus’ viral bats.

Detailing is top-notch, with a rubbery pink upper with what looks like the familiar green rings underneath. At the bottom of the bag, the bottom looks like the sharpened end of a graphite pencil running through the shaved wood. There is also the iconic Ticonderoga wordmark below the foot mechanism.

Functionally, compared to the Eclipse E-3.5, the Victus collab bag is 1/10th of a pound heavier at 4.9 pounds and features an 8-inch circular tip, half an inch smaller than the 3.5. It also features Sun Mountain’s EZ-Fit Lite dual strap system and an insulated drink sleeve.

What we liked

Despite being on the larger end of the bag spectrum, the Victus Gold collab carries very well thanks to the strap system and a well-balanced design.

For those who like to walk and carry but are also overpackers, this bag has you covered with plenty of space in each of the 10 pockets. The range pocket (which I’m increasingly a fan of) is actually velor lined and has a divider so you can put your phone in there too.

Whether you want to use a pushchair or motorized stroller, the round top design fits well in the arms of most strollers.

And of course, the look of the bag is special and the material is so well made that it has not shown any dirt despite constant use. If there was a knock on Sun Mountain before, it was that their bags weren’t the most durable. The new nylon material seems much stronger and should hold up over time.

What could be better

There’s little to grab in this limited-edition bag, but there’s a slight irony in the fact that a traditional “pencil” golf bag is an unstable carry bag.

I would like to see Sun Mountain and Victus return with the same design in a true Sunday bag design. In other words, a “pencil pencil” bag.

I usually go for smaller bag models that prioritize light weight and ease of carrying. The Victus Golf collaboration is certainly bigger than that, but it’s actually offered in two sizes.

In addition to the standard size, there is also a petite size that is two inches shorter (33 inches).

Golf bags are a very personal choice, but whose identity wasn’t shaped by the Ticonderoga Pencil in high school? Maybe you’ve been to the Dixon ones. That’s okay. But if you’re looking for a fun statement that’s just as functional, the gold Sun Mountain x Victus Pencil Bag is a fantastic option. Get them while they last!
