If you’ve set a hard limit at $399, I understand. I’ll be the first to tell you that there are some excellent drivers sitting right above that threshold right now ( Titleist GT Series) and the data backs them up. But if $399 is your number, this is my list.
I have hit all these drivers. I’ve also spent hundreds of hours digging into the test data behind them over the last few years, and it’s the combination of those two things that brings this list together. There are other options under $399, but these are the ones I’d buy and here’s why.
Best for: Medium handicappers and medium to slow swingers who want a balanced driver
of Elite X earned a 9.5 MGS score on The most wanted test of 2025one of the highest marks of any driver now sitting at this price. In 2025 MW testing at slow swing speeds, he posted an 88.4 percent field goal percentage with a YFC (yards from center) of 13.94. At average speed, the numbers were still strong with 81.6 percent playable and 51.4 percent shooting percentage.
He gives up some ground at faster swing speeds, where his playable strikeout percentage dropped to 70.2 percent and YFC climbed to 20.17. If you’re consistently over 105 mph, there may be better options on this list. When testing, I liked the overall feel and forgiveness of this one, but in the end I spent a bit more for the Triple Diamond Max model.
A 9.5 MGS score that is now hundreds of dollars off its original price is a hard argument to walk away from.
Best for: Faster swingers (95+ mph)
I just bought this driver for my husband. He had a 10 year old COBRA driver and it was time for an upgrade. At $299, it’s kind of hard to argue.
With a quick swing speed, testing showed that he produced 278.9 carry yards and 290.4 total yards, with a 69.1 percent field goal percentage and a YFC of 21.16.
With slow swing velocities, he posted an 87.1 pitching percentage and a YFC of 15.43, great but not elite numbers. This is a driver that rewards faster movement speeds and if you have that speed, the performance to price ratio here is almost unfair. Best for: Top ball hitters who want workability and a penetrating flight
of TSR3 earned a 9.2 MGS score on The most wanted test of 2024 with strong numbers in all three swing speed categories.
Here’s what these numbers don’t tell you: TSR3 Her field goal percentage consistently runs well below her field goal percentage. At slow speeds in 2024, straight shots were 44.6 percent while field goals were 92.8 percent. This gap is the personality of the driver. He moves the ball a lot, but you have to be able to help keep him in play.
Best for: Medium speed players who want uncompromising speed and forgiveness
I wrote about this last year because for one when Shane Lowry had the ZXi in his bag. In the speed test of movement among the most wanted 2025, ZXi posted first in ball speed, fourth in carry distance and third in forgiveness. Finished seventh overall, the sort of result that gets overlooked.
of ZXi scored an 8.6 overall in the 2025 test, which undersells it for the golfer it’s actually built for. If your swing speed lives between 90 and 105 mph and you want speed, distance and consistency without major compromises, it’s worth a serious look before spending twice as much on something else.
Best for: Golfers who prioritize accuracy and ball retention
of E725 earned a 9.2 MGS score in 2025 MW testing with an accuracy score of 9.7. If finding cheap routes is the main goal, the data shows here first.
of Tour Edge Exotics E725 was consistent across all three speed categories with accuracy as the clear strength.
Tour Edge doesn’t have the same marketing footprint as the other names on this list. This is part of the reason why the price remains reasonable and the performance does not suffer. If you’ve never hit one, E725 it’s worth putting it in your hands before making a decision.
