“I didn’t know if I could ride again, a motorcycle. I didn’t know if I could ride at my level. So at that point I said, ‘OK, maybe I can, but let’s take it long, I want to get my time, no pressure.’

“I don’t want to come back and have to do a demonstration. … I’m the same as Martin. So I say, ‘OK, stay long, we’ll be fine.’ But of course, when we tell (Aprilia), they say, ‘No f—— way to go.’

I was saying, “If I sign this contract, I won’t come back even this year. I want to take my time and recover 100%, and when I feel ready, I will come back.”

“So the reason I wanted to change that was a little bit. I always thought ’27 was the year of the Japanese. Since I heard about the rules, I always thought about it. So I thought, yes, it would be a good option.”

George Martin explains why he thinks Japanese manufacturers will return to work in 2027
