Tim Bradley believes the growing ties between Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson and Zuffa Boxing has less to do with avoiding certain opponents and more to do with the extraordinary financial opportunities now available in the sport.
Speculation surrounding Haney and Stevenson potentially joining Dana White’s boxing venture has intensified in recent weeks, with both fighters operating without long-term promotional commitments.
“Nobody’s going to be able to pay them that type of money. It doesn’t matter where they go, they’re not going to make that type of money,” Bradley said on his YouTube channel.
“We can remember and go back when PBC was established, they were overpaying fighters. Eddie Hearn is at DAZN, they started overpaying fighters. Right now, this is the period for these fighters, especially at the top level, if they’re looking to make boku money, now is the perfect opportunity.”
“With that being said, that’s why I see Haney and also Shakur Stevenson signing on that dotted line,” Bradley said. “How they’re going to do it, that’s different. How they draft their contract, that’s going to be different.”
“You only make this type of money once in a lifetime. It’s a perfect opportunity for both of these guys because of the type of life-changing money they’re going to get.”
Stevenson fulfilled his promotional commitments with Matchroom earlier this year after previously departing from the top ranks, leaving the WBC lightweight champion without a formal promoter. Haney, meanwhile, has largely managed his career with his father, Bill Haney, after previous partnerships with both Matchroom and Top Rank.
Any move involving Haney could still be complicated by his position as WBO welterweight champion. The sanctioning body recently reaffirmed that his mandatory fight against top contender Keyshawn Davis remains next, despite discussions about other possible fights.
