Frank Smith dismisses Adam Azim’s 50-50 claim: ‘It’s more like 80-20’

Matchroom Boxing CEO Frank Smith does not believe Adam Azim deserved an even split in a potential fight with WBO light welterweight champion Dalton Smith.

The two unbeaten British fighters have been linked with a future showdown, but Smith has made it clear that he sees Dalton Smith as the clear A-side based on his achievements, draw and recent success at world level.

Frank questioned what Azim had achieved compared to the reigning WBO champion.

“Adam Azim is not on Dalton Smith’s level. Dalton Smith went out there and won a world title. He did everything the hard way,” Frank told DAZN Boxing.

“What has Adam Azim done? Everyone needs to be sensible. I hear him talking about 50-50. It’s more like 80-20. This guy went to America and won a world title. He’s going to do a big crowd in Hillsborough. Adam Azim can hardly do a 300,000 audience at the BBC these days.”

Dalton Smith won the WBO title earlier this year when he defeated Subriel Matias in New York. The victory elevated the Sheffield native to world champion status and cemented his position among the top names in the 140-pound division.

Smith also pointed to Dalton’s willingness to take on tough challenges throughout his career, arguing that he has earned the right to dictate the terms of any future fight with Azim.

“So you have to look at the reality, and the reality is, this guy here is the one that matters,” Frank said. “It’s going to be whatever’s right for him. He’s never taken himself out of a fight. He’s taken every test that’s been in front of him.

“I look at it, and I think, what did Adam Azim do? That’s no disrespect to Adam Azim, by the way. He did what he had to the people before him. It’s going to be on his terms. That’s all I’m trying to say.”

Despite his criticism of Azim’s claims, Smith stressed that he expects the fight to eventually take place.

“I’m not saying the fight won’t happen. I’m sure it will happen, and Dalton Smith will destroy Adam Azim like he did at the Barclays Center earlier this year. But it has to be for the right terms, and this man is the king of the castle now,” Frank said.
