Agit Kabayel believes people are finally giving him credit for his stoppage win over Frank Sanchez after Sanchez defeated undefeated heavyweight Richard Torrez Jr. last Saturday night in Egypt. knocked out in the second round.
Sanchez’s quick finish over Torrez changed the conversation surrounding Kabayel’s seventh-round knockout victory against the Cuban contender in May 2024. Some fans at the time brushed aside the win, arguing Sanchez was no longer the fighter he once was. Kabayel says Sanchez’s performance against Torrez proved otherwise.
“When I beat Sanchez, people said, ‘Yeah, Kabayel, Sanchez wasn’t a big test before his career,'” Kabayel said on Inside The Ring. “I stopped him after seven rounds.”
“Now people understand what level Kabayel is. Yes, the performance on Sanchez was very good. I wish him all the best for his career in the future.”
Kabayel has built momentum in the heavyweight division over the past two years with wins over Sanchez, Arslanbek Makhmudov and Zhilei Zhang. His pressing style and bodywork have turned him into one of the toughest heavyweights in the division, but he’s still waiting for his first world title shot.
“No, I think it’s my time. It’s time for the world title shot,” Kabayel said.
Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has been linked with several options following his knockout victory over Rico Verhoeven earlier this month in Egypt. Kabayel, the WBC interim champion, continued to push for his mandatory title opportunity, although questions remain as to whether Usyk’s team will move in that direction next.
“What did I say? ‘More time and more time.’ I have waited so long for the opportunity,” Kabayel said.
Kabayel’s stock has quietly risen during Usyk’s run at the top of the division. Sanchez’s knockout of Torrez added another vindication to his record at a time when he is still trying to force his way into the heavyweight title picture.
