Is the Oura 4 ring suitable for golfers?

When I reviewed the previous version of Oura Ring in 2021some of the commenters didn’t think it was a golf product.

Here is one of the comments:

“I guess it’s all about ‘golf’ if you try hard enough. Can we review the best felt tip markers to hit your next ball?” (pit)

In 2021, the dedicated wearable fitness tracker (aka non-smartwatch) space was dominated by simple devices that were little more than fancy pedometers. In that context, I can see how Pete and other readers would be skeptical about golf-related fitness trackers.

(By the way, Pete, I’m a big fan of Permanent Sharpie brush tip marks to mark my ball.)

Fast forward five years and fitness trackers are everywhere including golf. Rory McIlroy’s Augusta-green Woop belt was on full display when he won the 2026 Masters.

This makes sense because professional and dedicated amateur players now train like elite athletes.

The days of practicing golf through multiple iterations of Modelos and Marlboros are long gone.

Curiosity about the new Oura ring 4?

There is a striking parallel between consumer awareness and advances in technology in the fitness apparel market.

More and more people are using wearable technology to track their workouts and overall health. At the same time, the technology itself is advancing, providing more reliable data and more sophisticated data analysis.

Yes, artificial intelligence is involved.

of Oura ring 4 is the most advanced wearable Oura to date. of Oura Ceramic Ring it’s a newer version, but the electronics and sensors are the same as the Oura Ring 4.

Since my old ring was an Oura 2 ring, it seemed like a good time to see what had changed.

As it turns out, a lot has changed since then my Oura Ring 2 review. The basic premise of tracking your health data continues, but the array of sensors and data collected from Our ring 4 it is well beyond that of the Oura 2 Ring.

The extended range of sensors offers 18 different measurement paths of the “Smart Sensor”. This means that there are options for emitter paths to sensors. As such, the ring can determine the most effective path for data collection at a given time.

If nothing else, this uses a lot less battery than turning on all the sensors at once. It also helps the data stay consistent if you need to switch the ring to another finger.

The sensor’s reach has expanded from being primarily a sleep-measuring tool to a 24/7 fitness tracker. The heart data is much more sophisticated, now providing information about training zones as well as typical values of heart rate variability and heart rate.

of Oura ring 4 it’s no longer something that just records data while you sleep.

of Oura ring 4 Sleep/Standby/Activity Schedule

General data analysis plan for Oura ring 4 it’s not much different from the Oura Ring 2. The ring tracks your vitals while you sleep, makes an analysis of your current health situation and makes a suggestion about your activity level for the following day.

Most days, your standard sleep and recovery data will result in standard activity targets. However, if you’ve had great sleep with exceptional recovery values, then the ring will push you beyond your standard activity level.

If your data indicates a potential recovery issue, it will reset the activity target or even suggest a rest day when you turn off activity tracking and just rest.

During the last two months, Oura ring 4 it was quite a place. In times of high stress, which it also measures, the suggested rest days coincided with days when I knew I should take it easy.

There were a few times when I felt the ring was being too protective and I had high activity days when it suggested rest. Mostly this was related to spring allergies. Allergies were hammering my sinuses and the ring read my vitals as stressed.

The ring didn’t know I could pop an antihistamine or three and go golfing.

One last observation about the data. The longer you wear the ring, the more complex the profile it creates. After wearing one Oura ring over a few weeks or months, the data becomes more meaningful. The external days become less important and you begin to see the reality of where you are now and where you can go.

(Also, how the hell did I become a morning person?)

daily Oura ring 4 comfort at home and on the course

of Oura ring 4 the design is very comfortable. Although still larger than my wedding ring, the aerospace-titanium construction keeps the Oura Ring 4 lightweight. The inside of the ring is smooth. The sensor bumps of the Oura Ring 2 are gone. Instead, the sensors are integrated into the ring and flush with the inner surface.

For everyday wear, I wear the ring on my left index finger. I tried my right index finger but kept hitting it on the door handles.

By the way, wear the Oura fitting ring for a while before ordering your permanent ring. Do all the things you would do with the ring before making your final sizing decisions. You may not realize it, but your fingers also swell and shrink throughout the day.

Pay attention to this and you should end up with the right size ring.

Seriously, if you are interested in becoming one Oura ring user, wear the mounting ring for several days. You may find that the size of your finger and therefore the ring fluctuates quite a bit.

Carry out all your usual activities with the right ring. This way you can understand if wearing the ring is related to your activities or hinders them.

Oura ring swings

Although I usually wear Oura ring 4 on my left index finger, I move it to my right middle finger for golf. On my left hand, the ring impedes my grasp. On the right, I don’t even notice.

I’ve played a dozen rounds with the ring and my scores have improved. Maybe the ring forces me to have a softer grip with my right hand or maybe I just play better when the weather is warm.

Regardless, playing with Oura ring it does not negatively affect my results.

Furthermore, the game of golf has not damaged the ring. Not yet, anyway. The titanium ring sits well against the rubber handle. I have scratched the finish a little here and there doing other things (removing four feet of gravel) but no golf related damage so far.

Oura ring 4 vs. Up“is a fairly frequent Google search string. Since I have both, I thought I should call for the comparison. I’m not sure I can definitively choose the “best” unit, but there are uses where one is better than the other.

For example, I think that Up the strap is better at tracking real-time fitness data. The Whoop strap can connect directly to fitness equipment (like Peloton bikes) and act as a real-time heart rate monitor. of Oura ring it can also measure heart rate, but the ring doesn’t have the hardware ability to pair with other devices. Basically, it is too small to house the necessary electronics.

of Wow the strap also frees up your hands for whatever you want to do. Of course, this will be the deciding factor for many people. If you can’t feel comfortable working or playing golf with Oura ring in, you go with the belt.

Going in the other direction, the size and weight of Oura ring makes it more comfortable to wear than Up. You’ll forget you’re wearing it.

At night, this was especially true for me. I don’t notice Oura ring when you go to sleep. More than once, Up the strap made me think I forgot to take the watch off.

I also prefer the e way Oura ring the application presents the data. Each aspect recorded is scored out of 100. For your activity goal, you are given a calorie target for the day. This is much easier to understand than Whoop’s Strain activity objective.

Walking three miles to burn about 300 calories makes more sense than achieving a 2.7 Strain score.

of Oura ring also comes off as more concerned about my well-being than Woop. He suggests rest days, tells me that my sleep and heart health are improving, and generally focuses more on the overall picture of health.

of Up it’s a bit more like your gym buddy yelling at you to finish that last rep.

This is not a judgment, just an observation. Both fitness perspectives are useful, but may suit different types of users.

In my experience, Oura ring it has a cooler atmosphere.

As for the price difference between the two, it’s a bit of a wash. of Oura ring is more expensive at first, but the monthly subscription price is much lower than that of Up. After a few years of use, everything ends up pretty much the same.

Why have you come this far?

If you are still reading this, I would ask you to reflect on why. What are you looking for in a fitness tracker? Want to get fitter? Are you worried about a current or future health condition?

Something has motivated you to reach the bottom of the article.

I’m not sure any fitness tracker can do that recovery anything but they can motivate you take the necessary actions to improve.

Do you want to lose weight? Then hit your activity goal and stop eating junk. The second part of this statement is for you. of Oura ring can’t make a healthy donut.

Are you worried about your heart? of Oura ring will monitor your heart, following trends in heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV). However, it won’t fix anything. If the Oura Ring reports that your heart age is above your actual age, you should take steps (literally) to correct it.

Good or bad, it’s all about measuring and reporting data. What you do with that data is up to you.

If you don’t want to know that alcohol lowers your HRV by 10 percent, then maybe a fitness tracker isn’t for you.

However, if you want data that you can then use to make a better, healthier version of yourself through diet and lifestyle changes, Oura ring will make an excellent coach.

Coach Oura will give it to you straight, identifying your areas that need improvement and then offering suggestions on how to improve.

If following data-based advice improves your overall health and well-being, your golf game will improve as well. (Hear that, Pete?)
