Eddie Hearn says Fabio Wardley made the right Dubois decision

Eddie Hearn believes Fabio Wardley made the right decision by activating his rematch clause for a second fight against Daniel Dubois, even after the punishment he took in their first encounter.

Hearn admitted Wardley will enter the rematch as an underdog, but said opportunities to fight for the heavyweight championship cannot be overlooked. The Matchroom promoter also compared the situation to Anthony Joshua rematching Andy Ruiz Jr. took after losing their first fight in 2019.

Hearn said critics often tell fighters to rebuild only after a damaging loss, but argued that heavyweight boxing can change with one show. He added that he still wouldn’t rule Wardley out completely, even though Dubois is considered the stronger favorite this time around.

Matchroom promoter Hearn said Wardley deserves credit for taking the rematch instead of rebuilding with easier fights first. He compared the situation to Anthony Joshua beating Andy Ruiz Jr. faced again immediately following his upset loss in 2019, saying heavyweight title opportunities are too important to pass up.

“The right thing. I think he did the right thing. I think it’s easy to criticize, and I’ve been there before, when I mean AJ is a classic example, specifically after the Ruiz fight,” Hearn told Boxing News.

“Everybody said don’t take the rematch, fight first, do it, do it. You have a chance on your plate in your hand to win the world heavyweight championship.

“Fabio is an underdog in that fight, but he can win. He can win that fight, and if you have a chance to win that fight, I think for me you have to take it.”

Hearn said Wardley would need to make adjustments after the first fight, particularly with his jab, but said the Ipswich heavyweight was still dangerous because of his willingness to fight aggressively under pressure.

“Daniel, this time is a big favorite in the fight, but I wouldn’t rule out Fabio Wardley in this fight,” Hearn said.

“He has to make adjustments. Usyk said it today, where was the sting? But what he does is incredible. He is always alive and he is always dangerous.”
