Most Valuable Promotions says Claressa Shields is no longer welcome at its events after an altercation with Alycia Baumgardner during the MVP MMA 1 show over the weekend.
The incident reportedly took place in a VIP area during the event headlined by Ronda Rousey vs. Gina Carano. MVP later released a public statement announcing that Shields has been banned from all future company events until further notice.
“Claressa Shields is immediately banned from all MVP events until further notice.
“There is a time and a place for warrior tension and banter, but to physically attack a fellow athlete while there as a guest in a private VIP area is unacceptable. MVP would like to thank venue security for their quick response to address and de-escalate the situation, and appreciates that Alycia Baumgardner did not retaliate and further escalate the situation.”
MVP posted the statement on social media after reports surfaced that Shields and Baumgardner exchanged words before the situation turned physical.
The rivalry between the two undisputed champions has been building online for months, with both taking shots at each other repeatedly over social media and interviews. The tension eventually culminated in a face-to-face confrontation at the event.
Shields later suggested that Baumgardner’s behavior and comments provoked the incident, while Baumgardner denied that he did anything to spark the altercation.
Baumgardner also suggested that she intends to pursue the case further.
“Things escalated without any provocation,” Baumgardner said, adding that she intends to handle the situation “professionally and legally” going forward.
The public fallout deepens the rivalry between two of the biggest names in women’s boxing, especially with MVP now taking a clear public stance against Shields.
