Leeds cruised to a dramatic 1-0 win over Brighton at Elland Road, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring in the 90th minute to secure a crucial win despite being dominated for large periods.
Leeds went into this final matchday 14th in the Premier League table with 44 points. Brighton, for its part, was in 7th position with 53 points and arrived as a clear favorite. The visitors had won their last game, while Leeds showed mixed form with two wins in their last five matches.
Brighton controlled proceedings from the opening whistle, dictating play with their superior possession. Leeds sat deep and looked to exploit space on the counter attack. There were few clear-cut chances in the first half, with both teams probing without finding the breakthrough.
Karl Darlow proved essential for Leeds between the posts. The goalkeeper made several important saves to keep the score even. Brighton’s Pascal Groß tested Darlow with two shots on target, but the Leeds keeper held firm.
Leeds created limited chances but remained dangerous on the break. The home team managed just one shot on target in the first 45 minutes. At half-time, the game remained goalless despite Brighton’s dominance of possession and the chances created.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Brighton continued to push forward, racking up eight shots on goal throughout the game. Leeds defended resolutely, soaking up the pressure and biding their time.
As the game entered stoppage time, few expected a breakthrough. Then, in the 90th minute plus six, Calvert-Lewin struck with force. The Leeds striker finished clinically to send Elland Road into raptures. Calvert-Lewin was shown a yellow card seconds later for his celebration.
The statistics painted a clear picture of the contest. Brighton dominated with 66 per cent possession and a total of 539 passes. The visitors created far more chances, registering a total of 18 shots compared to Leeds’ seven. Brighton’s expected goals total of 2.46 far exceeded their actual output.
Darlow’s display proved decisive, making seven saves to repeatedly deny Brighton. Groß was Brighton’s standout performer with two shots on goal and four key assists. Calvert-Lewin’s late intervention proved the difference despite his limited prior involvement.
This result takes Leeds to 47 points with one game remaining. Brighton’s failure to convert their chances keeps them on 53 points. The visitors remain in seventh place, while Leeds climb to mid-table safety.
Leeds travel into their final game knowing they have momentum. Brighton need to regroup quickly and finish the season strongly. This spectacular finish showed that football prizes clinical finishing over possession dominance.
