Gianluca Mancini scored twice as AS Roma dominated Serie A rivals Lazio with a 2-0 win at the Estadio Olimpico on 17 May 2026.
Roma secured a decisive derby victory over Lazio, with defender Mancini proving the unlikely hero. The Giallorossi occupy fifth place in the table with 67 points in 36 games. Lazio, meanwhile, is in ninth position with 51 points after 36 games. Both teams came to the Olympics looking for crucial points in the final stretch of the season.
Roma started well and controlled possession early. The hosts created space in midfield and pressed Lazio’s back with purpose. Lazio struggled to adjust to their tempo and allowed Roma to dictate the pace in the early stages.
The breakthrough came in the 40th minute when Mancini rose above the Lazio defence. He powered a header past goalkeeper Alessio Furlanetto to give Roma a 1-0 lead. The goal rewarded Roma’s first-half dominance and left Lazio needing a response.
The yellow cards came in quickly as the tension grew. Kalidou Karamoh was booked in the 21st minute for Lazio. Roma’s Mateo Hermoso and Lazio’s Matteo Cancellieri were booked in the 42nd minute after a heated exchange.
The second half started with Roma pressing for a second goal. Lazio made tactical adjustments but continued to struggle defensively. Roma’s midfield controlled the ball with 49 percent of possession despite Lazio’s slight lead in the first half.
The decisive second goal came in the 66th minute. Mancini struck again, this time finishing a chance inside the box to make it 2-0. The defender’s double secured victory for Roma and dashed Lazio’s hopes of a comeback.
Discipline gradually eroded in the final stages. Nicolò Rovella was sent off for Lazio in the 70th minute. Roma’s Wesley Franca was also sent off moments later, leaving both sides with ten men. The layoffs added drama, but didn’t change the outcome.
Roma’s statistics showed control of the match. They have managed 16 shots in total with 7 on target. Lazio managed just 6 shots with just 2 on target. Roma’s expected goals were 1.2 compared to Lazio’s 0.71, reflecting the quality of the chances created.
Paulo Dybala impressed for Roma with an assist and an 8.0 rating. Furlanetto made 6 saves for Lazio in a losing effort. Mancini’s performance earned him a grade of 9.5, the highest of the game.
Roma’s victory strengthens their position in fifth place. The win extends their recent form to three wins from their last five games. Lazio’s defeat has them looking for consistency in the final weeks of the campaign.
