The turn of the millennium was arguably the darkest chapter in Indian cricket history. In 2000, public trust in the sport was at an all-time low, hit by a disastrous match-fixing scandal. It was during this period of complete turmoil that a 27-year-old young man Sourav Ganguly handed over the captaincy, he was tasked not only to win matches but also to restore the integrity of the broken game.

This internal review process was crucial. By establishing that the core of the team is clean, Ganguly can completely shift his focus away from the paranoia of the scandal and focus on the mammoth task at hand: rebuilding a competitive cricket team from the ground up.

Overcoming nerves and managing the titans of Indian cricket
Taking over the captaincy at the age of 27 is a tough task for anyone, but for Ganguly, the challenge was compounded by a unique dressing room dynamic. He was suddenly charged with ordering engagements Mohammad Azhareddin and Tendulkar, men who had previously been their own captains.
