Real Madrid cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Oviedo at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, with Gonzalo García and Jude Bellingham scoring to extend their title challenge.
Real Madrid dominated La Liga’s Oviedo on May 14, maintaining their push for the championship. The home side controlled possession from the start, dictating the game against a visiting side fighting to avoid relegation. Madrid took second place with 77 points from 35 games, while Oviedo remained in 20th place with just 29 points.
García opened the scoring in the 44th minute, breaking the deadlock just before the break. The midfielder’s fine finish rewarded Madrid’s patient play and constant pressure. Oviedo offered little threat in the first period, managing just one shot on goal as they retreated into a defensive shell.
Madrid’s offensive intent was clear throughout the first half. They created numerous chances, with 10 shots inside the area. Brahim Díaz has proved a constant threat down the wing, troubling Oviedo’s defense repeatedly. The visitors could only absorb the punishment, committing 14 fouls as they struggled to match their opposition’s intensity.
The possession statistics told the story of the first 45 minutes. Madrid enjoyed 65 percent of ball control, passing with 93 percent accuracy. Their 614 total passes eclipsed Oviedo’s 321, highlighting the gulf in class between the teams.
The second half followed a similar pattern. Madrid continued to push forward while Oviedo remained compact and defensive. Bellingham entered the game and made an immediate impact, finding the back of the net in the 80th minute to seal the win.
Bellingham’s goal effectively ended the game. The midfielder’s clinical finish demonstrated Madrid’s superior quality in the final third. The Oviedo goalkeeper made five saves but was unable to prevent the second shot from finding the net.
Eduardo Camavinga anchored Madrid’s midfield with solid defensive work, completing the 90 minutes and making three tackles. Thibaut Courtois remained relatively untested in goal, making one save in a largely one-sided affair. Garcia earned a team-high 8.3 impact rating before his substitution.
The statistics reinforced Madrid’s dominance. They recorded a total of 18 shots with seven on target, compared to Oviedo’s nine shots and only one on target. Madrid’s expected goals (xG) of 1.38 surpassed Oviedo’s 0.69, reflecting the quality of chances created.
Oviedo’s defensive struggles continued, now sitting in 20th place with relegation. Madrid’s win keeps them in second place, although they remain dependent on results elsewhere. The comfortable win showcased their offensive prowess and defensive stability.
Madrid face a tight fixture schedule as the season enters its final stages. Oviedo must find solutions quickly if they hope to escape the relegation zone.
