Paris Saint-Germain secured a 2-0 win at Lens to maintain control of top spot in Ligue 1, with goals from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ilya Mbaye securing three crucial points.
PSG arrived at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis as league leaders, with a three-point lead over second-placed Lens. The visitors went into the game unbeaten in their last two outings, while Lens looked to close the gap at the top. The two teams entered the competition with a contrasting pace, setting the stage for an intense battle.
Kvaratskhelia broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, giving PSG a starting point in the match. The Georgian winger’s clinical finish rewarded the visitors’ controlled approach in the early stages. Lens responded with intensity but struggled to find their rhythm against PSG’s organized defence.
The hosts created chances in the first half despite falling behind. Lens generated 10 shots on goal and dominated possession with 38 percent of the ball. However, PSG goalkeeper Matvey Safonov proved imposing, making crucial saves when called upon.
Lens pressed harder as the half wore on, sensing an opportunity to equalize before the break. Their offensive play improved, but they couldn’t convert the early pressure into goals. PSG maintained defensive discipline while looking dangerous on the counter-attack.
The second half saw Lens continue to look for a breakthrough, but PSG controlled the tempo effectively. The visitors’ 62 percent possession allowed them to dictate play and limit Lens’ chances. Despite Lens’ 24 total shots, they managed just three on target throughout the game.
PSG added a second goal in the 90th minute when Ilya Mbaye secured the victory. The late strike ended any hopes of a Lens comeback and confirmed PSG’s dominance. Mbaye’s finish came after sustained pressure from the visitors in the closing stages.
Safonov’s performance was decisive for PSG, recording eight saves and earning a 9.2 rating. The goalkeeper’s distribution and decision-making kept Lens at bay. Zabarnyi also impressed defensively, making three tackles and maintaining a 9.2 rating despite picking up a yellow card in the 45th minute.
The statistics reflected PSG’s control. PSG recorded an expected goals (xG) figure of 0.85, while Lens created 2.51 xG but failed to convert. PSG completed 712 passes with 88 percent accuracy, compared to Lens’ 414 at 80 percent.
Ousmane Dembélé made an assist for PSG and played a key role in the visitors’ offensive set-up. Mamadou Sangare worked tirelessly for Lens, completing five tackles and two shots on goal in a losing effort.
The win extends PSG’s lead at the top to four points with a game to play. Lens remain in second place, but face a challenge from the climb to dethrone the champions. PSG’s efficiency in front of goal proved the difference in a game where possession and shots favored the home side.
