Union Berlin secured an emphatic 3-1 win in Mainz to boost their survival hopes, with Oliver Burke and Josip Juranović netting in the closing stages to seal a crucial away win.
FSV Mainz 05 hosted Union Berlin on May 10 at the Mewa Arena, with both teams fighting for crucial points in their Bundesliga campaigns. Mainz took 10th place with 37 points from 32 games, while Union took 13th place with 33 points. The visitors arrived in poor form, winless in their last four games, but needed points to strengthen their position in the League.
Union Berlin struck first through Aleksandar Ilic in the 38th minute, and took the lead at the break. Mainz controlled possession with 53 percent of the ball, but struggled to convert their chances into goals. The home side created chances but lacked the edge needed to trouble the Union defense early on.
Sheraldo Becker doubled Union’s lead just two minutes after the restart in the 48th minute. The goal came at a critical moment, extending the visitors’ lead and swinging the momentum decisively in their favour. Mainz’s defensive vulnerabilities were exposed as Union’s forwards found space with increasing regularity.
Mainz responded with renewed urgency, but could not find a way past the hard-hitting Union backline. Christopher Trimmel anchored the Union defense with a commanding performance, posting an 8.9 rating and making five key assists. The home side managed just three shots on target throughout the game despite the possession advantage.
Burke restored the Union’s three-goal cushion in the 88th minute with a clinical finish. The goal effectively settled the game with just a few minutes to go. Juranović added a fourth in stoppage time on 90+1, completing a dominant display from the visitors.
The statistics underlined the superiority of the Union in attack. The Union recorded nine shots on target compared to Mainz’s three, while generating an expected goals total of 2.67 to 1.5 from their opponents. The Union completed 327 accurate passes out of 398 total attempts, maintaining an 82 percent accuracy despite their attacking focus.
The Union’s defensive organization was exceptional throughout. They limited Mainz to just four shots from outside the box and blocked numerous attempts. Danilho Doekhi and Trimmel formed a solid partnership at the back, keeping Mainz’s attack largely contained.
Mainz’s only goal came through Ilic in the first half, but it was not enough to salvage anything from the game. The hosts’ inability to capitalize on possession advantage proved costly. They got 14 shots in total, but only converted one.
The elimination of opportunities was decisive for Mainz’s afternoon. Despite dominating possession, they were unable to break down the Union’s compact defensive shape. His passing accuracy of 84 percent showed technical quality, but the end product remained sparse.
Union’s substitutions paid dividends in the closing stages. Burke and Juranović made immediate impacts, combining for two goals in the dying moments. The tactical change proved effective in securing maximum points.
This win moves Union Berlin closer to safety in the league table. The three points give them room to breathe in their battle against relegation. Mainz, meanwhile, must regroup quickly as they aim to consolidate their mid-table position in the remaining games.
