Dubois gets title shot after recent loss in Wardley fight

Wardley comes through a very different route. He had to recover in fights, take punishment and still find late finishes, building his position the hard way against opponents like Justis Huni and Joseph Parker. That pattern, of losing rounds and still closing out the show, has become part of how he wins, and it’s central to how he views this match.

Fabio has openly admitted that Dubois got the best of him years ago in sparring, long before he found his footing as a professional.

“I have no qualms about saying he punched me,” Wardley said of sessions from seven or eight years ago. “But I would beg him not to take anything from that spat and carry it through to now, because this was a guy who had just put on a pair of gloves.”

At that point, Dubois was already a decorated amateur and considered a future power, while Wardley was learning on the job. The gap has since narrowed, and Wardley points to how each man reacts when a fight turns as the real difference between them.

“I think it’s pretty on the nose. If it doesn’t go his way, he dives, and if it doesn’t go my way, I stay the course,” Wardley said.

That belief ties in with another point Wardley made in the build-up: the instability surrounding Dubois outside the ring. Coaching and camp changes have followed key moments in his career, and Wardley sees it as a sign of where responsibility falls when things go wrong.

“It seems unsettled. When there’s a fight or something goes wrong, you immediately blame the coach and get another one. Maybe it’s you,” Wardley said.

Dubois’ recent loss to Oleksandr Usyk would normally push a heavyweight into rebuilding fights, but instead he’s moving straight back into a title shot. That decision has as much to do with position and market value as with results, and it makes this battle carry a different feel than a standard defense.

Wardley is trying to prove he belongs at the top and that his route has prepared him for it. Dubois is trying to show that the backlash hasn’t changed where he stands. One of them reinforces what he built. The other gets the chance to skip a step.
