End of the photo. Alemu edges Mamo in marathon thriller Belfast City

The weekly endurance race leg includes a massive 26.2 mile run across Northern Ireland, plus the Newcastle-Gateshead Marathon and more.

BELFAST CITY MARATHON, Northern Ireland, May 2

Ethiopians Abai Alemu and Tadese Mamo dominated and could only be separated by a hundredth of a second at the front of the event as both clocked 2:16:24.

The pair moved clear in the closing stages before a sprint finish saw Alemu break the tape in first place. “I’m very happy and the people have been very nice,” Alemu said. “The weather was very cold and the speed was not good, but the feeling is nice.”

Behind, Ethiopian Abera Ketema was a minute behind in third as Swansea’s Josh Griffiths was the first Briton in 2:18:01 as fifth-placed Jonathan Cornish set a personal best of 2:19:38.

Morocco’s Azizah Selsouli topped the Women’s Mountain World Cup in 2:38:00.
