Gilberto Ramirez ruled out of serious injury after David Benavidez was stopped

Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez has been released from the hospital following his sixth round stoppage loss to David Benavidez last Saturday night, with no fractures or serious injuries reported.

ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez said Ramirez was released Saturday afternoon and is in good condition. The primary issue after the fight was swelling around his right eye, which led to the doctor’s decision to stop the fight.

“I’m fine after being released from the hospital this afternoon. The swelling, mainly of the right eye, is going down very well,” Ramirez said.

He also referenced an elbow that landed during the final exchange as part of the damage sustained late in the fight.

“Within that bad taste in the mouth, the elbow that David gave me in that last combination also remains,” Ramirez said.

The fight was stopped in the sixth round after visible swelling and accumulated damage prompted a ringside medical examination. It was the first stoppage loss of Ramirez’s career.

His release from hospital less than 24 hours after the fight indicated no lasting injury, with recovery already underway.
