CSK vs MI: Will MS Dhoni make his IPL 2026 debut? Hitting coach Mike Hussey gives an update

Preparation for the long-awaited clash between them Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians Fans all over the country are anxiously awaiting the answer to a question – it took an emotional turn MS Dhoni will finally make his IPL 2026 debut? As the two giants get set to lock horns at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on May 2, anticipation of Dhoni’s return continues to dominate the narrative.

Injury setback delays MS Dhoni’s IPL 2026 start

The 44-year-old CSK legend has been sidelined since the start of the season after straining his calf during pre-season training. Initially expected to miss only the opening round, Dhoni’s recovery took longer than expected. As a result, the five-time IPL-winning captain was forced to stay out, focusing on rehabilitation and supervised training sessions.

Despite his absence, Dhoni remained in close touch with the team, mentored the players and gradually returned to net training. However, match preparation, especially his ability to run between the wickets with full intensity, has been a major concern for the team management.

Mike Hussey provides an important fitness update on Dhoni’s return

CSK batting coach speaking before the high-stakes match Mike Hussey offered a cautiously optimistic update on Dhoni’s progress. While stopping short of confirming his presence against Mumbai Indians, Hussey revealed that the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman is steadily progressing towards full fitness.

“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or the next match after that, but he’s progressing very well.” Hussey said at the pre-match press conference.

The former Australian cricketer stressed that Dhoni’s basic cricketing skills remain intact, with no concerns about his batting or wicketkeeping. Instead, the focus is on restoring the physical intensity required in match situations, particularly the high-pressure phases of the shootout.

Running remains the last hurdle

Hussey emphasized that Dhoni’s recovery has reached a stage where only one key element needs to fall into place – confidence in his running ability.

“He was getting his run rate up and that was probably the hardest part. We’re very confident about his batting and wicket control. It’s about making sure he can keep up his run power, especially towards the back end of the innings.” Hussein explained.

In modern T20 cricket, quick singles and sharp runs between the wickets often make the crucial difference, especially in the death overs. This aspect becomes even more critical for a player like Dhoni who excels at finishing roles.

Hussey made it clear that the final decision on Dhoni’s return will rest entirely with the player himself. The franchise wants to ensure that the veteran returns only when he feels confident in his body.

“He’ll nod as soon as he feels confidence in his calf. We’re under his leadership now.” Hussain added.
