Leeds defeated Burnley 3-1 at Elland Road to climb to safety, with Anton Stach’s early strike setting the tone for a dominant performance at home.
Leeds went into this May 1 clash sitting 15th in the Premier League with 40 points from 34 games. Burnley were in 19th place, struggling with just 20 points from as many games. The visitors arrived in a poor state of form, having lost their last three games. Leeds have shown recent inconsistency but were clearly motivated to secure their league status.
Stach made an immediate impact, firing Leeds ahead in the 8th minute with a clinical finish. The home side controlled possession early and pressured Burnley into defensive positions. Leeds created multiple chances as Burnley struggled to establish any rhythm in the early stages.
Several yellow cards were issued in the first half as both teams became increasingly physical. Struijk was booked for Leeds in the 27th minute. Burnley’s Humphreys and Tchaouna picked up yellows in the 35th and 37th minutes respectively. Rodon added another caution to Leeds in the 40th minute as the tempo intensified.
Leeds kept up the pressure throughout the first period. Despite Burnley’s attempts to settle, they managed only limited attacking opportunities. The hosts created 11 shots inside the box compared to Burnley’s five. Half-time arrived with Leeds in full control of the contest.
The second half began with Leeds extending their lead. Okafor doubled the lead in the 52nd minute with a composed finish. Four minutes later, Calvert-Lewin made it 3-0 in the 56th minute, seemingly putting the game out of reach. Calvert-Lewin received a yellow card in the 48th minute for another incident.
Burnley finally found the net through Tchaouna in the 71st minute, pulling one back to make it 3-1. The goal consoled the visitors, but it came too late to threaten a comeback. Leeds controlled the rest of the game despite Burnley’s late efforts.
Ampadu was booked for Leeds in the 75th minute, while Mejbri saw a yellow for Burnley in the 88th minute. The closing stages were largely controlled by the home side. Leeds saw out the win comfortably.
The stats told the story of Leeds’ dominance. Leeds recorded a total of 18 shots with 8 on target, compared to Burnley’s 9 shots and 3 on target. Expected goals favored Leeds at 1.65 and Burnley 0.53. Leeds completed 356 of 448 passes with 79% accuracy, while Burnley managed 416 of 503 passes with 83% accuracy.
Stach led Leeds’ performance with an 8.0 rating, combining his goal with three key passes and two tackles. Bogle added an assist while maintaining solid defense throughout. Okafor’s 7.3 rating reflects his clinical finishing. For Burnley, Tchaouna earned a 7.2 rating despite the heavy defeat.
This win moves Leeds closer to safety as the season winds down. Burnley’s struggles continue, leaving them in a precarious position near the relegation zone. Leeds’ dominant display suggests they have the quality to secure their Premier League status for another season.
