Atalanta and Lazio battled to a 1-1 draw in an epic Coppa Italia clash, with the game decided by a marathon penalty shoot-out that saw eleven shots on target before Charles De Ketelaere finally settled the tie.
The New Balance Arena played host to a tense cup encounter on 22 April 2026 as two ambitious teams looked to progress. Atalanta dominated possession with 66% of the ball, while Lazio sat deeper and looked for chances on the break. The first 83 minutes produced few clear-cut chances, with both defenses holding firm.
The tie was broken in the 84th minute when Alessio Romagnoli rose higher to head home for Lazio. The defender’s clinical finish thrilled the away fans. It looked like Lazio would hold on for a famous victory in the Bergamo fortress.
However, Atalanta responded instantly. Just two minutes later, Mario PaÅ¡alić equalized to tie the game. The midfielder’s strike revived hope for the home crowd and forced the tie into extra time.
The extra 30 minutes produced no more goals. Both teams created chances but lacked the final touch needed to break the tie. As the clock ticked down to penalties, tension was building inside the arena.
The penalty shootout turned into a marathon affair. Gianluca Raspadori opened the scoring for Atalanta, converting his spot-kick. Nicolò Tavares replied for Lazio to keep the tie. Gianluca Scamacca made it 2-1, but Danilo Cataldi equalized again.
The drama continued unabated. Davide Zappacosta converted at Atalanta, then Gustav Isaksen equalized at Lazio. Pašalić went forward again and scored his second penalty in the shootout. Mateo Lazzari kept Lazio alive with another conversion.
At 5-5, De Ketelaere finally broke the deadlock. The Atalanta winger sent Lazio’s goalkeeper the wrong way to seal a dramatic victory. After 120 minutes of football and eleven penalty attempts, Atalanta won.
Atalanta’s statistics revealed their control throughout. They registered 29 shots in total, with 21 from inside the box. Lazio managed just eight shots in total, and their goalkeeper made five crucial saves to keep them in the game.
Both Romagnoli and Pašalić earned player of the match honors, each scoring 8.2. Romagnoli completed all 120 minutes and made three tackles. Pašalić appeared for 49 minutes, but made two key passes next to his goal.
The win puts Atalanta through to the next round of the Coppa Italia. Lazio’s Cup hopes end here, although they can take pride in a competitive performance against a team with superior possession.
