Regarding HOW did they get it? There are different tools, of course, and earlier this week, Justin Thomas offered some thoughts, after being asked: If you were an agent recruiting college players, what would you look for? How do you know someone will do well?
“I feel like the golf side, you can definitely see it,” Thomas said. “I notice a lot, or maybe what I get more than anything is just talking to them and how they talk and how things go.
“I know I’ve been around some college players who are very comfortable, if you will, and it’s hard to explain, but against someone like Jackson (Birch)I don’t think he – he doesn’t feel like he owes any of this or I have to play like this or I deserve this. He seems like he just wants to be the best player he can be, and he’s not cocky, he’s not arrogant, he doesn’t think he’s above anybody or any situation versus some others – I’ve been around maybe a few of those.
“I would say for me, that would probably be the biggest thing is just seeing how they handle themselves.”
Thomas was then asked what he thought set him apart.
“You have to have some skills,” he said. “You have to have some — there’s a lot of people you see try and do something athletic or sports where you’re like, you’re just not going to make it. I have some of those people in my family. I’ve seen them try to play golf and I think you’re never going to be good at golf no matter how hard you try. That’s part of it.
“But it’s a good question. I’m not sure if I can — other than one specific thing in golf, I don’t know. I think my work ethic and my desire to win golf tournaments and be the best, I think it has a lot to do with where I’m at. But I’m not sure.”
