The conversation about the best goalkeeper in world football has intensified after contrasting but equally impressive displays in the Champions League. David Raya He was praised after his decisive role in Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Sporting, with his teammates even labeling him the best in the world. In the same contest, Manuel Neuer put in an epochal performance for Bayern Munich against Real Madrid, prompting Germany to call for his international return despite retiring in 2024.
Raya’s display included four crucial saves, highlighting a powerful effort on the crossbar to keep the game level before the winning goal arrived. His consistency in Europe has been remarkable, conceding just 12 goals in 23 games since last season and avoiding an expected nine goals. In all competitions in Europe’s top five leagues, he also leads the clean sheet with 22.
Despite these successes, Raya is not Spain’s first-choice goalkeeper. Unai Simon remains the preferred option, described as “indisputable” by coach Luis de la Fuente. Even so, former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon has described Raya as “world class”, highlighting his authority and the confidence he inspires in his defence.
Meanwhile, Neuer’s performance against Real Madrid stood out as one of the best of his career. At 40, he continues to perform at an elite level, making his 136th Champions League appearance for Bayern. Peter Schmeichel described his performance as one of the best he has ever seen, particularly praising a remarkable save to deny Kylian Mbappe.
Seasoned stars and proven winners
Thibaut Courtoiscurrently sidelined by injury, he remains a central figure in this debate. His absence has been felt at Real Madrid, given his record 105 saves in 23 Champions League games since last season, with a save rate of 78.2%. Although he has conceded more goals than Raya in this period, his achievements include multiple domestic and European titles, along with the 2022 Yashin Trophy.
Emiliano Martinez he has also built a strong case, especially after Argentina’s triumph at the 2022 World Cup. He has collected several individual honours, including the Yashin Trophies in 2023 and 2024 and two FIFA best awards. His Champions League numbers last season were equally strong, recording 49 saves and an 80% save percentage in 12 games.
For Alissonoutstanding performances on the biggest stage continue to define his reputation. His display against Paris Saint-Germain in last season’s knockout stages was pivotal, earning him recognition as the difference-maker in a narrow victory. Since then, he has maintained an impressive 86.1% save percentage in the competition. He was also the first winner of the Yashin Trophy and has consistently ranked among the top contenders.
Gianluigi Donnarummanow Manchester City’s first choice, he brings a commanding presence between the posts. While he has enjoyed success, including a Champions League triumph with PSG and two Yashin Trophy wins, questions remain about his adaptability to the physical demands of the Premier League, particularly during the ball.
Coherence, impact and emerging competitors
Mike Maignan has established himself as a reliable player since replacing Donnarumma at AC Milan. After rising to prominence at Lille, he played a key role in Milan’s league title win in his debut season, leading both the clean sheet and save percentage. Former Brazil goalkeeper Dida praised Maignan’s consistency and placed him at the top of his personal rankings.
An additional name worth noting is Yassine Bounou. Now playing in Saudi Arabia, he previously impressed in Europe with Sevilla and finished third in the Yashin Trophy 2023 standings. His performances in Morocco, including his historic World Cups and contributions during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, further underline his quality.
With a World Cup around the corner, the debate about the leading goalkeeper remains open. Each contestant brings a unique combination of achievement, form and influence, making the question of who really stands above the rest more compelling than ever.
