As the debate over the future of Indian cricket’s senior stars continues to grow, the former World Cup hero Yuvraj Singh stepped in with a strong message for decision makers. Speaking on the Sports Tak podcast, Yuvraj stressed the need for transparency regarding Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Yuvraj Singh calls for clarity on Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s future
The two stalwarts remain key figures in India’s ODI set-up, even as they drift away from other formats. Their recent performances have shown that they are still capable of performing at the highest level. But the lack of a clear roadmap from the management has raised questions about long-term planning.
Acknowledging their continued importance, Yuvraj stated that “Big players are important. Virat Kohli has had a great streak. Rohit has been consistent.” he said. But he also made it clear that performance alone should not delay important decisions about the future.
According to him, honest communication is important not only for the benefit of the team, but also for the players themselves.
“When will you groom Jaiswal?”: Yuvraj Singh
While Yuvraj supported the participation of experienced players, his biggest concern was the lack of opportunities for budding talents. Yashasvi Jaiswal.
The young opener impressed with a brilliant century in the previous ODI outing but found himself out of the playing XI in the following series. For Yuvraj, it raised serious questions about India’s approach to building the squad for the future.
“Look at Yashasvi Jaiswal; he scored a century in the last ODI but is sitting out. When are you going to decorate Jaiswal? There’s a World Cup next year” Yuvraj asked a question.
He emphasized that taking care of young football players should not be left to the last minute. If Jaiswal is to be seen as a long-term option, then he needs consistent opportunities now – not just occasional flukes.
“If you’re going to the World Cup, you should have played a few games” he added.
Yuvraj’s words reflect a wider concern in Indian cricket – finding the right balance between supporting proven performers and preparing the next generation for big tournaments.

Yuvraj’s warning for the future of the Indian team
Apart from individual players, Yuvraj’s message was based on long-term planning. He made it clear that his intention is not to let go of big players, but to ensure that the team is not caught unprepared.
“I’m not saying you have to drop anybody. But if you’re playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup, you have to start preparing your team now. You have to give them a lot of games. Make a decision, it shouldn’t happen at the last moment that one of your senior players gets injured and you don’t have a young player.” Yuvraj got a warning.
His warning highlights a practical concern – injuries, loss of form or sudden transitions can derail even the strongest teams without a ready backup.
With both Rohit and Virat eyeing to extend their ODI careers till 2027, the onus is now on the selectors and team management to manage that transition carefully. It’s not just about maintaining current success, it’s about ensuring sustainability.
Yuvraj’s perspective comes from experience. Having been part of a World Cup winning team, he understands the importance of time to build a team.
