Three months after Mustafizur Rahman’s sudden exit Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad sparked wide debate, with IPL chairman Arun Singh Dhumal finally speaking about the incident. The release of the Bangladeshi pacer is ahead IPL 2026 raised serious questions about the overlap between cricket and geopolitics, making it one of the most talked about off-field issues of the season.
IPL chairman Mustafizur Rahman addresses the controversy
In an interview with the Financial Times, Dhumal called the situation regrettable but chose to remain measured in his response.
“I’d just say it’s unfortunate. Other than that, I don’t know much.” Dhumal said.
He further added: “Sometimes it’s unfortunate that things happen. I don’t think the government has any interest or role in dealing with cricket on a day-to-day basis. The government supports cricket as a whole. But yes, sometimes things happen around us and decisions are made accordingly. I’m sure common sense will prevail and it won’t be like that again.” he added.
His comments reflect a cautious attempt to distance the cricket administration from political developments, while acknowledging that external factors can sometimes influence decisions within the sport.
What led to Mustafizur Rahman’s release from KKR?
The controversy comes in January this year, shortly after the IPL mega auction. Mustafizur Bought by KKR for a whopping ₹ 9.20 crore, he became the most expensive Bangladeshi player in IPL history. However, within weeks, the franchise approved his release as per BCCI’s instructions.
It is reported that this step was taken against the background of strained diplomatic relations between India and Bangladesh. Although no official details were given at the time, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the decision had been taken. “According to recent events.”
The result was immediate and significant. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reacted strongly, even demanding the ICC to shift its matches in the 2026 T20 World Cup. When this appeal was rejected, tensions escalated, with Bangladesh eventually pulling out of the tournament altogether.
The situation did not end there. IPL broadcasts in Bangladesh were briefly suspended, underscoring how deeply the issue has affected cricketing ties between the two countries. Although relations have stabilized somewhat since then, the episode left a lasting mark on the sport’s global image.
KKR are progressing but questions remain
Despite the controversy, KKR quickly regrouped and signed Zimbabwean Blessing Muzarabani as Mustafizur’s replacement. The tall fast bowler has already made an impression in IPL 2026, delivering strong performances and helping fill the void left by the Bangladeshi star.
Meanwhile, Mustafizur continued his cricketing journey elsewhere. With 65 wickets in 60 IPL matches across multiple franchises, he remains one of the most experienced T20 bowlers in the game. After missing out on IPL action this season, he joined the Pakistan Super League (PSL) where he has shown promising form.
Looking ahead, the bigger concern is the future of the cricketing relationship between India and Bangladesh. Although the ICC’s Future Tours Program includes upcoming matches between the two sides, those plans remain uncertain for now.
Dhumal hopes so “Common sense will prevail” reflects a wider sentiment within the cricket community – that the game needs to rise above political tensions. However, the Mustafizur episode is a reminder that cricket does not always exist in isolation.
As IPL 2026 has progressed, KKR have progressed on the field, but the questions raised by this controversy continue to linger in the background. Whether such incidents can be avoided in the future will depend on how effectively cricket boards manage the delicate balance between sport and externalities.
