Juventus were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by Sassuolo at the Allianz Stadium, with Manuel Locatelli’s penalty miss proving costly for the home side.
Juventus dropped crucial points in their Serie A campaign, drawing 1-1 against a resilient Sassuolo. The decisive moment came late, as Manuel Locatelli failed to convert a penalty and left the home crowd stunned.
Heading into the game, Juventus sat fifth in the Serie A table with 53 points, keen to strengthen their bid for a Champions League place. Sassuolo, eleventh with 38 points, arrived with a guide of mixed form but with a recent increase in results. They were ready to challenge the old lady in her house.
The home side started with clear intent, immediately dictating the pace and controlling possession. Their early pressure quickly translated into an advantage. In the 14th minute, Francisco Conceição made a perfectly weighted pass in the area. Kenan Yildiz pounced, drilling a powerful shot past the keeper to give Juventus the lead.
Juventus continued to assert their dominance, creating a number of chances. His attacking talent was evident, with multiple attempts on goal testing the Sassuolo defence. However, Sassuolo goalkeeper Arijanet Murić stood tall, making several crucial saves to prevent the gap from widening.
Despite their superior possession and numerous chances, Juventus only held a narrow one-goal lead at the break. Manager Massimiliano Allegri probably urged his team to maintain their intensity and convert more of their promising attacks. The second half promised a tactical battle.
Sassuolo came out of the break with renewed energy and a more aggressive approach. Their tactical adjustments paid off early in the second half. In the 52nd minute, Domenico Berardi, a constant threat, made a precise assist. Andrea Pinamonti reacted strongly, guiding the ball past the Juventus goalkeeper to level the scores.
The draw spurred Juventus to make strategic substitutions to regain control and find a winner. Khéphren Thuram and Andrea Cambiaso were introduced in the 62nd minute, adding fresh legs to the midfield and attack. Lloyd Kelly and Jérémie Boga later joined the action in the 79th minute, injecting pace and creativity. Bremer received a yellow card for a foul in the 64th minute.
The drama came to a head in the 87th minute when Juventus were awarded a penalty, offering a golden opportunity to clinch victory. Manuel Locatelli rose confidently to take the spot kick. To the home side’s dismay, his powerful effort fell wide, denying Juventus a crucial late goal.
The statistical analysis highlighted Juventus’ control, with 66% ball possession and a total of 18 significant shots, 8 of which were on target. His expected goals (xG) of 2.13 underlined his missed opportunities. Sassuolo, on the other hand, had just 34% possession and 7 shots, with just 1 on target, but their clinical finish from Pinamonti yielded a valuable point. Arijanet Murić was undoubtedly the man of the match for Sassuolo, making 7 vital saves.
This home draw represents a frustrating result for Juventus, which hampers their climb up the Serie A standings. Sassuolo, on the other hand, will consider this hard-earned point at the Allianz Stadium a meaningful and stimulating result for their campaign.
