The damage that doesn’t show on a fighter’s record


“It’s not the fights that really beat us. It’s the training camps that beat us,” Berto said on the InsideRingShow. “We spar three days a week against good fighters who blow your mind. They are trying to make a name for themselves.”

That damage is invisible. It does not appear on a fighter’s record, and it is not measured in the official rounds on fight night. By the time the bell rings, some of that work has already taken its toll.

That dynamic remains the same across most camps. Tension partners come with their own pressures. Some are chasing attention. Others try to stay in rotation. No one wants to be the one who gets embarrassed and is not asked back to camp. The laps stay loud, even when they aren’t supposed to be.

By the time fight night arrives, a fighter can already endure rounds of unseen punishment. The sharpness people expect is sometimes gone before the opening bell, replaced by a version that seems a step slower or a fraction more responsive.

Max Kellerman pointed to the same issue from a different angle, noting that the type of sparring a fighter receives can affect how much damage they take. In his comparison, fighters who appear more vulnerable tend to absorb tougher rounds in the gym, while others are handled more cautiously.

“The damage that fighters take, a lot of it comes in preparation for the fight,” Kellerman said.

This helps explain why some performances feel off for no apparent reason. The opponent gets the credit, but the erosion may have started earlier, in closed gyms where there are no cameras and no official records.

It is not always decline. Sometimes these are accumulated rounds that never appear on a ledger. As soon as it appears in the ring, it feels sudden, even though it’s been building for weeks.
