Real Betis cruised to a resounding 4-0 victory over Panathinaikos, demonstrating clinical finishing and tactical superiority in a dominant UEFA Europa League display.
Real Betis achieved a great 4-0 win against Panathinaikos at the Estadio de la Cartuja. Antony starred in an excellent individual performance with a goal and top score.
Coming into this UEFA Europa League clash, Real Betis maintained an unbeaten record in the group, having managed a win and a draw in their opening matches. Panathinaikos, with a win and a loss, aimed to strengthen their position and climb the group table.
The home team wasted no time in asserting control. Aitor Ruibal shot Real Betis forward and found the net only in the eighth minute. This set the tone for a vibrant attacking half.
Panathinaikos struggled to contain Betis’ pressure, with V. Taborda booked in the 19th minute. As the first half drew to a close, Sofyan Amrabat doubled Betis’ lead, scoring in the 45+1 minute to send them into the break 2-0.
Panathinaikos faced a daunting task at the break, needing a significant tactical change to alter the game’s trajectory. Betis, on the other hand, wanted to maintain their intensity and capitalize more.
Real Betis continued their offensive surge after the restart. Cucho Hernández added a third goal in the 53rd minute, expertly converting an assist from Ruibal. That effectively sealed the game early in the second half.
Panathinaikos brought on Renato Sanches and Tasos Bakasetas in the 55th minute, looking for fresh momentum. However, G. Kyriakopoulos quickly received a yellow card. Betis then made changes, bringing in Álvaro Fidalgo and Marc Roca for goalscorers Ruibal and Amrabat.
The home side were relentless and got their fourth goal in the 66th minute. Antony struck a powerful shot, assisted by Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, extending Betis’ unassailable lead even further. Panathinaikos presented Facundo Pellistri and G. Katris.
Both teams made late changes as the game wound down. Pablo Fornals and C. Ávila entered the fray for Betis in place of Hernández. F. Djuricic received a yellow card for Panathinaikos in the 89th minute. Ávila also saw a yellow in stoppage time for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Real Betis showed overwhelming dominance, registering 22 shots in total, with 11 on target. They significantly outscored Panathinaikos, who managed just 4 shots, with 2 on target. Betis’ expected goals (xG) of 3.0 eclipsed Panathinaikos’ 0.26. Panathinaikos goalkeeper Alban Lafont has made 7 saves.
This impressive 4-0 win significantly strengthens Real Betis’ position in the UEFA Europa League group stage. They now sit at the top of their group with seven points. Panathinaikos, despite a valiant effort from Lafont, face a difficult road after this heavy defeat.
