Gambhir has never been one to shy away from friction on the field, and his coaching style reflects that boldness. Speaking to ANI, Gambhir made it clear that while he respects Arshdeep’s sportsmanship, he prefers the killer instinct required to defend his world title.

You represent your country. You will be aggressive. There is nothing wrong with that“, Gambhir told ANI. He emphasized that no elite bowler enjoys being hit for boundaries and the backlash was a natural by-product of elite competition. For Gambhir, the apology was a nice gesture, but completely optional. He added, “Even if it wasn’t a pity, I was totally fine with it. There are no friends on the cricket field.”

This white-line feverish approach is a hallmark of the current Indian set-up. By supporting Arshdeep, Gambhir sends a clear message to his team: intensity is a requirement, not a recommendation. While the ICC has termed the incident as a violation of the Code of Conduct, the Indian camp has termed it as a heartbreak for the champion side.

India retain T20I crown with record-breaking win

Disciplinary drama aside, the 2026 final cemented India’s status as a T20 powerhouse. By defeating the BlackCaps, India became the first men’s team to successfully defend their T20 World Cup title since the 2024 glory. Chasing a massive 256, New Zealand were bowled out for 159, with the pressure applied by Arshdeep and his mates proving too much for the Kiwis to handle.

Arshdeep remained a key figure in the campaign despite figures of 0/32 and a tense mid-match. His post-match interaction with Mitchell, in which he joked that his shot was reversed into an inclination, showed a level of maturity that balanced the aggression required by Gambhir.

The fine may lighten Arshdeep’s purse, but Gambhir’s public support only strengthens the youngster’s resolve. As India celebrated its third T20 World Cup trophy, the story shifted from a disciplinary breakdown to a discussion about the evolving identity of Indian cricket: a team that wins with skill but isn’t afraid to show its teeth in the heat of the moment.
