Atletico Madrid demolished Tottenham 5-2 in a UEFA Champions League masterclass, with Julián Alvarez producing a sensational two-goal, one-assist performance.
Coming into the game, Atlético Madrid were seventh in their Champions League group with 12 points, showing some good recent form. Tottenham, just two places behind, were hoping to close the gap on their rivals.
The game burst into life early, with Tottenham’s Djed Spence receiving a yellow card for fouling in the fourth minute. Just two minutes later, Marcos Llorente opened the scoring, guiding home a clinical finish after an assist from Julian Álvarez.
Then the floodgates really opened for the hosts. Antoine Griezmann doubled Atlético’s lead in the 14th minute with a well-placed shot. Amazingly, Julian Alvarez added a third just 60 seconds later, leaving Tottenham reeling from the quick attack.
Defensive problems continued for the visitors as Robin Le Normand scored Atletico’s fourth goal in the 22nd minute. That incredible start gave the home side an almost unassailable lead early in the first half.
Tottenham found a lifeline four minutes later when Pedro Porro pulled back, firing past the keeper in the 26th minute, assisted by Richarlison. It offered a slight glimmer of hope before the break.
At half-time, the Tottenham manager faced a monumental task, needing a major tactical change to stem the tide and prevent further damage. Atlético de Madrid, meanwhile, looked comfortable in their commanding position.
The second half saw immediate changes for Tottenham, with Mathis Tel and Randal Kolo Muani introduced. However, Atlético quickly extinguished any hope of a comeback.
Julián Álvarez completed his brace in the 55th minute, linking up with Griezmann to score Atlético’s fifth goal. This devastating blow cemented his status as the standout player of the match.
Tottenham’s frustration mounted, leading to a string of yellow cards for Richarlison and Andre Gray. Late substitutions for both teams injected fresh legs but didn’t change the overall flow.
Dominic Solanke grabbed a consolation goal for Tottenham in the 76th minute, assisted by Porro, but it was too late. Further bookings for Kevin Danso and Cristian Romero highlighted Tottenham’s difficult evening.
Atlético de Madrid dominated the statistics, with 58% possession and scored five goals in seven shots on goal. Their expected goals (xG) stood at 3.12 compared to Tottenham’s 1.41, reflecting their superior attacking threat.
This emphatic 5-2 victory significantly strengthens Atlético de Madrid’s position in the Champions League group. Tottenham, now with just one win in their last five group games, will need a quick response to stay in contention.
