Jai Opetaia Retains IBF Title As Validation Of Body Reviews Fight

The International Boxing Federation is reviewing the cruiserweight title status of Jai Opetaia after the champion fought on a non-sanctioned card promoted by Zuffa Boxing earlier this month.

Opetaia (26-0, 20 KOs) defeated Brandon Glanton on March 8 to win the inaugural Zuffa Boxing belt in a fight that did not carry IBF sanction. The sanctioning body had previously indicated that Opetaia could lose his cruiserweight title for competing in the event without its sanction.

No ruling has been announced, and Opetaia continues to hold the IBF belt as the organization continues its review.

“Update on Jai Opetaia’s title status: IBF continues to review case, meaning his cruiserweight title remains intact,” Jake Donovan reported on social media. “Jai’s post-fight speech emphasizing his commitment to chasing undisputed prompted the sanctioning body to investigate the matter further.”

Opetaia stated after the fight that he intends to pursue undisputed status in the cruiserweight division. That stance appears to have influenced the IBF’s decision to postpone action while the situation is investigated. Sanctioning bodies often move quickly when champions compete in unsanctioned events, but the IBF chose to continue to review the circumstances surrounding Opetaia’s involvement before making a final decision.

The review leaves the division awaiting a final verdict from the sanctioning body. A decision could determine whether Opetaia remains free to pursue big fights across different promotional platforms or whether he must choose between the IBF title and appearances on cards outside the organization’s sanctioning structure.

A unification option still exists. Noel Mikaelian holds the WBC cruiserweight title and has previously expressed interest in facing Opetaia if the fight can be arranged.

So the IBF title remains with Opetaia for now while the sanctioning body determines whether disciplinary action will follow his appearance at the Zuffa Boxing event in the coming weeks as the review process continues internally.
