Nicolás González’s late brace guided Atletico Madrid to a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Real Sociedad in an intense La Liga clash.
Atletico Madrid secured a crucial 3-2 La Liga win against Real Sociedad at the Riad Air Metropolitano, with substitute Nicolás González proving to be the match-winner. His two goals, including a late winner, secured all three points for the home side.
The hosts, third in the league, were looking to strengthen their Champions League credentials after a mixed run of recent results. Real Sociedad, currently eighth, have tried to boost the European places, arriving with inconsistent form. Both teams were eager to gain morale.
The match started with a bang as Atlético de Madrid quickly took the lead. In the 5th minute, Alexander Sørloth opened the scoring for the home side, guiding the ball expertly after an assist from José María Giménez.
However, Real Sociedad responded quickly, leveling the scores moments later. Carlos Soler found the back of the net in the 9th minute and his goal equalized for the visitors after a clever pass from Luka Sučić.
The game continued at a high pace, with both teams fighting fiercely for control. Atlético player Dávid Hancko received a yellow card in the 20th minute for a challenge, highlighting the intensity of the early exchanges. The first half ended with the score tied at 1-1.
At half-time, with the scores tied, the two coaches had work to do. Diego Simeone surely emphasized the need for his athletic side to maintain attacking pressure while tightening defensively. Imanol Alguacil would have urged Real Sociedad to maintain discipline and take advantage of counterattack opportunities.
In the second half, Real Sociedad’s Oskarsson received a yellow card in the 49th minute. Atlético manager Simeone made tactical changes, introducing Ademola Lookman, Giuliano Simeone and, most importantly, Nicolás González between the 53rd and 54th minutes.
These substitutions paid off immediately as Nicolás González fired Atletico back on the scoreboard. Assisted by Antoine Griezmann, the midfielder found the net in the 67th minute, prompting cheers from the home crowd.
However, the lead lasted barely a minute and Real Sociedad equalized again. Veteran striker Mikel Oyarzabal calmly struck in the 68th minute to make it 2-2 and ensure a tense finish.
With the game well balanced, Nicolás González struck the decisive blow for Atlético in the 81st minute. Matteo Ruggeri provided a crucial assist, allowing González to complete his brace and seal a thrilling 3-2 win.
Atlético de Madrid showed superior offensive intent, recording a total of 24 shots with 9 on target and an Expected Goals (xG) figure of 2.35. Real Sociedad managed only 7 shots, 3 on goal, and an xG of 0.41, despite their final clinic. Atlético also had 52% of the ball.
This hard-fought victory strengthened Atlético Madrid’s hold on third place in La Liga, showing significant character and resilience. Real Sociedad, despite drawing twice, will leave the capital disappointed, remaining in mid-table.
