A new watch partner for Eluid Kipchoge’s DSM-Firmenich running team.
When it seems like barely a month goes by without a new watch launch, it’s easy to wonder what new features could be added to the devices to make them worthwhile.
It’s also a time of change for Eliud Kipchoge’s running team, and in addition to new sponsor DSM-Firmenich, they have a new watch sponsor in the form of Huawei.
Huawei’s new GT Runner 2 enhances the standard features of a running watch while introducing an additional training ecosystem to provide a comprehensive running solution.
First, one of the most basic features of any running watch has been improved: the GPS element. With a new double-sided design, it creates a “floating antenna” that significantly improves positioning so well that the device tracks you perfectly even in built-up areas in the city center, dense forests and underpasses.

The dual-band satellite recording also uses all available GPS systems, so wherever you venture in the world, you’ll enjoy pin-point accuracy.
Another important feature that runners will appreciate is battery life. Sometimes we just hate having to charge our watch, but with up to 32 hours of full GPS use, the device can realistically be charged once every few weeks.
These key features make the device one of the industry leaders at the moment, along with the lightweight, 34g titanium alloy case and Kunlun glass display, a thinner and lighter alternative to sapphire glass, but no less durable or bright. The watch is also slightly smaller, slimmer and gently curved on the back for a tighter fit on the wrist.
Featuring a woven and rubber wrist, the woven version features a hollow design for reduced weight and breathability.
Common measures of sleep and recovery are also monitored along with skin temperature and blood oxygen saturation to give a more rounded picture of your current well-being.
The metrics recorded by the watch are the most in-depth numbers both during and after the run, and together with the watch app, they allow you to dive deep into minute-by-minute details, from pace to power and speed to ground contact and beyond.

Where this new device stands out is the connection with Kipchoge and his training partners. Professional Running Coach 2.0 software will create a training plan based on your goals and also use your daily performance to update the plan. This intuitive program was developed together with a real-time lactate threshold detection algorithm in collaboration with Beijing Sports University.
And when it comes to race day, another useful feature is marathon mode, a built-in walking strategy that uses a database of major marathons and road races from around the world to help you conquer the hills and speed you towards a PB.
