Want to draw *and* fades? It starts with changing your configuration

Being able to shape the ball both ways is a huge asset. This allows you to access pin locations that were previously unreachable, and allows you to shape the ball from the tip to avoid hazards. You can also get yourself out of trouble with ease by shaping the ball around the trees and back onto the fairway.

The problem for most recreational players is that they can only work the ball one way. They have one shot form and not much else.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with having a shot form that you feel comfortable with and sticking to it. But if you really If you want to start becoming a shooter, you will need to know how to shape the ball in both directions.

Fortunately, doing so is much easier than you might think. GOLF Top 100 Teachers Mike Malizia explained how in the past he shot with GOLF magazinewhich you can read about below.

How to hit pulls and fades

The good news about ball shaping is that it can be easily achieved through minor adjustments to your setup. And once you learn how to make those adjustments, you’ll be able to achieve both draws AND it fades.

Here’s how it works.

reconciliations

The first thing you want to do to score a draw is move the ball position slightly back to your position. Next, you want to tilt your hips and shoulders slightly away from the target.

“The main thing is that when I come back to impact, I want to make sure that my shoulders feel locked in and I want to feel this right side ‘contracting,'” says Malizia. “It helps promote a more inner path.”

With that in-out path and a slightly closed face, you’ll be able to swing the ball right to left with ease.

fade

For a fade, you’ll want to move the ball further into your stance. You’ll also want to limit the amount you tilt your hips and shoulders away from the target at address, giving you a more level setup position.

“On the stroke, you’ll see less of a bend on the right side and you’ll see more of an open chest,” says Malizia. “It will help you move a little more inside.”

By making these key setup adjustments, it becomes much easier to swing in a way that promotes a certain ball flight. So the next time you want to shape the ball a certain way, remember that it all starts with placement.
