Brentford stunned Newcastle with a late winner from Dango Ouattara to secure a hard-fought 3-2 win at St. James’ Park.
Brentford secured a dramatic 3-2 win at St. James’ Park, with Dango Ouattara’s eventual winner silencing the home crowd. Vitaly Janelt delivered a man-of-the-match performance, securing a vital victory for the visitors.
11th-placed Newcastle were aiming to climb the Premier League table against seventh-placed Brentford. The Magpies looked for consistency, while Brentford arrived with mixed recent form in a hotly contested league.
The home side started with purpose, and their pressure paid off in the 24th minute. Defender Sven Botman rose higher to head home Bruno Guimaraes’ well-placed cross, putting Newcastle on the scoresheet.
Brentford responded with growing confidence and found an equalizer in the 37th minute. Dango Ouattara provided a fine assist, setting up Vitaly Janelt who fired past the Newcastle keeper.
Just before the break, Newcastle’s Josh Murphy was shown a yellow card for a tackle in the box. Igor Thiago stepped up to convert the resulting penalty in the 45+2 minute, sending Brentford into the break with a surprising 2-1 lead.
Newcastle faced an uphill battle after conceding a penalty late in the first half. Manager Eddie Howe needed a strategic change to regain his balance and prevent Brentford from consolidating their lead.
Howe made immediate changes at half-time, introducing Nick Woltemade and Anthony Elanga to provide fresh impetus. Newcastle pushed hard for an equaliser, dominating the opening possession of the second half.
His persistence finally paid off. Newcastle won a penalty of their own in the 79th minute, and Bruno Guimaraes calmly dispatched it. The Brazilian midfielder equalized the score and re-ignited the St. James’ Park.
However, Brentford immediately hit back and stunned the home crowd once again. Dango Ouattara scored what turned out to be the winning goal in the 85th minute, guiding home a pinpoint pass from Mathias Jensen.
The game concluded with frantic late exchanges, including yellow cards for Brentford’s Vitaly Janelt and Newcastle’s Lewis Hall. Newcastle pressed hard but couldn’t find a third equaliser.
Newcastle finished the game with 54% possession and 16 total shots, but only 4 were on target, underperforming their expected 2.25 goals (xG). Brentford proved to be more clinical, scoring 3 goals with just 10 shots (5 on target) against an xG of 1.81.
This dramatic defeat keeps Newcastle in 11th place, missing a crucial opportunity to close the gap between the European qualification places. Brentford strengthen their 7th position, continuing their impressive push up the Premier League table.
