Petr Sulc’s only goal secured a vital 1-0 away win for ten-man Lyon at struggling Nantes.
Lyon secured a crucial 1-0 win against Nantes at the Stade de la Beaujoire on 7 February 2026. Petr Sulc’s first-half goal was the decisive moment, securing all three points for the visitors.
Lyon, coming into the match in formidable form, sat comfortably in fourth place in Ligue 1 after securing five straight wins. By contrast, struggling Nantes sat a perilous 16th, desperate for a turnaround after a poor run of results.
The match began with immediate drama as young Lyon striker Endrick was booked in just the second minute for holding. This set a tense early tone for a physical encounter.
Lyon capitalized on their attacking intent in the 25th minute. Afonso Moreira made a precise assist, which allowed Petr Sulc to deflect the ball wide and put the visitors ahead.
Nantes defender Kévin Amian also saw yellow in the 37th minute for a foul as the home side struggled to contain Lyon’s dynamic attacks. They looked for an equalizer before the break.
Nantes made a tactical change at the break and brought on Mostafa Mohamed to boost their attacking options. They needed a more direct approach to break down Lyon’s resilient defence.
The second half erupted in controversy when Endrick received his second yellow card for a tackle in the 61st minute. This dismissal left Lyon with ten men, completely changing the complexion of the game.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Lyon defended resolutely. Nantes pushed hard for an equaliser, with Rémy Cabella showing a creative spark, making four key passes.
The home side controlled possession more and had 13 shots in total, but only two tested Lyon goalkeeper Dominik Greif. Substitutions such as Dehmaine Tabibou aimed to unlock the defence.
Nantes picked up further bookings for Ali Youssef and Moussa Kaba as frustration mounted with their attempts at goal. The visitors held firm, with Greif making two crucial saves.
Lyon finished with an expected goal value (xG) of 1.21, better than Nantes’ 0.73, indicating that their goal was well deserved. Clinton Mata earned the highest match rating for his defensive efforts.
This hard-fought victory extended Lyon’s impressive winning streak to six games, cementing their position in the top four. Nantes, meanwhile, remains in a precarious position, still fighting to leave the relegation zone.
