Fundora makes a title defense against the man who made him champion

A new date is finally on the books for the WBC junior middleweight title fight between Sebastian Fundora and Keith Thurman, reviving a bout that feels like a ghost from two years ago.

In 2024, Thurman was the one to face Tim Tszyu before injury forced him out. Fundora took that opening, walked in on short notice and walked away with the WBC and WBO belts. It’s wild to think that Fundora is now defending his title against the very man whose misfortune made him a champion in the first place.

Premier Boxing Champions have confirmed that the fight will take place on March 28, 2026 at the MGM Grand, which will air on Prime Video PPV. This one was supposed to go down last October, but a hand injury to Fundora pushed it back.

Thurman enters this title shot with incredibly thin recent activity. He has fought just four times since 2017. His only ring time since 2022 was a single appearance in 2025 after nearly three years away. It’s hard to know what ‘One Time’ has left at this point in his career, as his last opponent, Brock Jarvis, wasn’t good enough to show if Thurman is still a top-level fighter.

Positioning it as a pay-per-view headliner is a bold move that focuses more on Thurman’s name than he has done in recent years. Although ranked the #3 WBC, he has only fought once since 2019.

While that was delayed, the rest of the 154 pounds didn’t wait. Interim champions and young contenders have made moves, making the junior middleweight division one of the hottest in the sport. Fundora’s defense against Thurman feels like a necessary step toward paying off an old debt, but it certainly halts the momentum of a division that’s already moving on.

With the injury healed and the date set, Fundora can finally close this chapter. It’s a lingering loose end that is being tied up, even if the timing and the price tag invite plenty of questions.
