If your irons lack compression, the problem may have less to do with your swing mechanics and more to do with how you use the ground. Specifically, how the pressure moves through your trail leg.
As Dr. Alison Curdt, a GOLF Top 100 Teachersexplains in a recent Instagram post, many amateurs make the critical mistake of pushing off from the toe during the fall — sending force in the wrong direction and weakening impact.
“When you push off from your toe, it misplaces your weight, causing lateral forces to not extend and reducing compression at impact,” says Curdt.
Instead, players must learn to move the pressure correctly through their feet so that the body lines up more efficiently and the club reaches impact with more speed and stability. The secret to unlocking this power: “Banking” your footprint foot.
Trail foot closure describes how pressure is loaded and then released through the foot as the swing changes direction. As Curdt explains, banking isn’t something golfers actively do on the swing—it’s a response that occurs when the swing changes direction.
During the backswing, Curdt says keeping pressure along the inside of the trail leg is key. This sets the stage for proper banking as you move down.
“Using the innermost part of the foot, push sideways toward the target from the entire inside of that foot,” she explains.
The key is to engage your entire foot, from toe to heel, to avoid rolling or rolling over your toes. When done correctly, this should help you shift your weight more efficiently and increase compression at impact.
Train the feeling
If you want to practice this feeling and master this key movement, a simple training tool can be a valuable tool. In the video above, Curdt uses a board she made herself by placing a peg in the center of a board slightly larger than her foot. If you don’t want to do it yourself, there are many ready-made training tools – like the one shown below – that work just as well.
Force Board Pro

To use it, start with the board under your foot and pressure on the inside of your foot. It should look and feel like the board is bent or slanted, with the “low” side closer to the target. Then, take slow test swings, emphasizing the “banking” move down – just before you enter the impact zone.
To use it, place the board under your trailing foot with your pressure on the inside edge. The table should be slightly tilted, as Curdt shows in the clip above. Start with slow, controlled rehearsal movements. As you switch to the downswing, use your entire foot to start pushing the inside edge.
“If you land correctly, you should feel like the board is almost pushing into the ground,” says Curdt, “which should propel your body forward, allowing you to make a proper weight shift and compress the golf ball.”
Once you can perform the movement correctly with a practice swing, insert a golf ball. Start slowly and as your confidence grows, gradually progress to full speed shooting.
