Brooks’ coach’s spotlight. Julian Flores, Brooks Beasts Track Club How to Create a Week-long Training Program for High School Cross-Country Runners

Julian Flores is an assistant coach for the Brooks Beasts Track Club.

RunBlogRun #1. Julia, how would you create a week long training program for high school cross country runners?

Julian Flores. I recommend a long run (60-75 minutes), threshold work and a speed session.

RunBlogRun #2. How do you feel about race days?

Julian Flores. While you may train during some early race days, race days are hard days.

RunBlogRun #3. How do you suggest a threshold day?

Julian Flores. I would suggest 2-3 minute threshold intervals that get the athletes HR up to 160-170. I would recommend 4-5 reps for athletes who can do a 5k in 16 minutes.

RunBlogRun #4. How about recovery days?

Julian Flores. Don’t worry about the clock, keep it really slow. Josh Kerr takes it really slow on his recovery days and you should too (Josh Kerr owns the WR Indoors at 2 miles and is the World Champion at 1500m in 2023) and 3000m Indoors in 2024. If he can keep it slow and easy, so can you.
