It’s homecoming week for Stan Wawrinka in Basel.
Playing in the Swiss Indoors Basel on a wild card this week, Wawrinka says he is not thinking of closing the curtain on his illustrious career and returning home.

The 40-year-old Wawrinka, who has a 2-11 record in 2025, said he plans to play in Athens next month and said he hopes to play some in 2026 as well.
“I said above all you will see when I decide to stop. We will see if there is another season, we will finish this already.” Wawrinka told Swiss publication Le Matin at his press conference in Basel. “I live in the present, I try to use it as much as possible.
“I know the end is very close, we all have a deadline and at some point we will have to take off the rockets. I am happy to be here in Basel and I will take stock after Athens. But yes, I hope to play a bit more next year.”
The Stanimal man, now ranked 158, is one of only three men in history to beat Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Andy Murray and Rafa Nadal in Grand Slam play, joining Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Tomas Berdych to achieve the feat.
Former world No.3 Wawrinka has previously said he would like to win one more title – he won his last title in front of home fans in Geneva 2017 and played his last Tour-level final in Umag 2023 – and with 580 career wins to his credit, he is 20 wins short of a 600th career victory.
The three-time Grand Slam champion said pure passion for playing is the driving force behind his career, which began in 2002.
“I love what I’m doing and I love to wake up and practice and still have the opportunity to play in such a beautiful tournament like here,” Wawrinka said. “As long as I’m enjoying this, I’ll keep pushing a little harder.
“I think it’s amazing to be a tennis player and when I was a kid I dreamed of doing it as a job. I’ve had the chance to win a lot of trophies, even a lot of big trophies and I’ve had the chance to achieve more of what I call my dream. I’ll keep pushing.”
