Ipswich vs Aston Villa: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Ipswich Town continue their quest for their first Premier League win of the season when they host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

The Tractor Boys have lost just two of their opening five Premier League games – defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City – and have picked up three points after three successive draws. In front of a packed Portman Road crowd, they will be aiming to get the better of a Villa side who were in Carabao Cup action in midweek.

The Villans beat Wycombe Wanderers to secure their place in the fourth round of the competition, but the games keep coming thick and fast for Unai Emery’s men. They also host Bayern Munich on Wednesday night in the Champions League.

theirs Premier League The form has been impressive though. Despite failing to keep a clean sheet in their opening five games of the 2024/25 campaign, Villa have now won four of their games, most recently beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in a West Midlands derby.

On-loan Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips missed last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Southampton and is doubtful to play against Villa on Sunday due to a thigh problem. Harry Clarke and Nathan Broadhead could return to the team.

Elsewhere, there should be little variation in Kieran McKenna’s line-up. The Northern Irishman has been reluctant to make any significant changes to his XI this term and is likely to appeal to a squad very similar to the one that took a late point from St. Mary’s Stadium.

Ipswich predicted line-up against Aston Villa (4-2-3-1): Muric; Tuanzebe, O’Shea, Greaves, Davis; Morsy, Cajuste; Burns, Hutchinson, Szmodics; Delap.

John McGinn

John McGinn added his name to the injury list last Saturday when he pulled his hamstring in the win against Wolves. He is expected to be out for at least a few weeks, joining long-term absentees Tyrone Mings and Boubacar Kamara in the treatment room.

Diego Carlos was injured in the warm-up before the midweek win at Wycombe but could return this weekend. However, Jaden Philogene will miss out again and Matty Cash is unlikely to return at right-back, while Lucas Digne remains a doubt after being withdrawn at half-time last Saturday.

Aston Villa’s predicted line-up against Ipswich (4-2-3-1): Martinez; Bogarde, Konsa, Torres, Maatsen; Look, Tielemans; Bailey, Rogers, Ramsey; Watkins.

Ipswich they harbor hopes of a first win of the season in any competition, but their chances are slim against a well-worked and relentless team. Village side The Tractor Boys have generally offered a compact defense this term, but they may be undone by a Villa forward line that is starting to hit its stride.

Morgan Rogers has shone in the opening weeks and registered two assists against Wolves, while Ollie Watkins has found his goalscoring touch again. While one eye may be on Bayern’s midweek battle, Villa should have enough quality and depth to punish newly-promoted Ipswich.

Prediction: Ipswich 1-3 Aston Villa
