It’s been a while since I went for a suitable driver. My current gamer, Callaway Mavrik, has been in the bag for about five years. I did not buy it after a great demo day or custom construction. It was more of a practical decision. The pricing had fallen, my old cobra needed replacement and after hitting a friend’s mavrik, I realized it was good enough.
And, honestly, it’s been.
I have never felt like Mavrik was holding me again. When tested in an imitator, I knew she rotated more or less, but in the course, I have always managed to adapt and make it work. This has been my model as a golf player. I have always been able to make the clubs adapt to my game instead of vice versa.
The mounting process
I came up with realistic expectations. If something was not significantly better, I was fully prepared to keep Mavrik in the bag. The goal was not to follow the last model for his sake. It was to determine if the new technology really made a difference in my game.
I have tested many options: Qi35 lining of Tayormadenew GT title executives, DS-Adapt i Cobra, Ping G440.
From there, we cycle in our heads and shafts and quickly became clear that the right combination could make a bigger difference than I expected.
It is not just about yards
With Mavrik, I was on average 240–248 yards of total distance. The matter was not really in the distance (though I would always get more), it was rotation. My numbers were pulled around 3,500 RPM, which meant that I was losing efficiency and participation.
With the right head and the axis, those rolling rates fell ready 2,500 RPM, being placed in a much better window. The launch was a little lower, the ball speed scored and suddenly I was seeing On average 252-258 yards. This is about 10 yards won, obviously visible.
With what I ended up
Winning configuration? Callaway Elyte Triple Diamond Max (10.5 °) paired with a Tour Tour Graph AD GC-6 Smrap.
It was not the axis that I was expecting to end, but feelings and performances were undeniable. I will save the deepest axis discussion for another article, but the intake is simple: the combination worked.
For the context, Elyte Triple Diamond is a more compact head, with low rotation built for accuracy while Elyte Triple Diamond Max It holds most of that performance DNA, but adds pardon and stability to a full 460cc profile.
I also tried the new axis in my old Mavrik head but the results were clearly better with this special driver/shaft combination.
Kraig Brandt, the most capable, summarized it perfectly after one of my last shakes of the session: “Once you get used to it, it will really go.” He was right. On the course, as I started to grow comfortable with it, the ball flight is significantly more penetrating and the distance profits are there.
Technology difference you can feel (after waiting five years to update)
Here’s what stands out after you have done the circuit breaker.
- Hottest face: The ball comes out differently. Even my children noticed the first day. “That’s different,” they said after watching some discs.
- Ball speed bump: A little but true growth that adds over 18 holes.
- Rotation Control: The lower rotation has meant the most stable keeping and participation. My missions are better.
- Penetrating flight: The new setting has no balloon. She holds her line and falls from heaven properly.

I tend to keep the driver for half a dozen years. I have always believed that I got a lot of them during that time period. Will I tell you to rush and replace your driver now if you are playing a Mavric, like me? Not necessarily.
The profits are there and they are true, but they are not guaranteed. In some shakes, I saw five or six meters. But in those where I chose 10 or more, the difference was noticeable.
