At the fully fitted podcast of this week, I talked to Johnny Wunder and Ian Fraser about mini driver. For whom is it? Why is it useful? When is a bad idea? And perhaps most importantly, can he replace my driver? Let’s answer with the first entry into our new series ‘Bag Builders’, where we break down the decisions you need to make to build the most effective set of tools for your game.
I am a strong believer who should not replace your driver with a mini driver if you are trying to build an efficient golf bag with 14 vehicles.
I understand the concept. Many players find the smallest shape and the shortest length of a mini driver to be checked, which means they hit more roads. But this usually comes with a sacrifice at the speed of the ball, which means a distance sacrifice. The argument has been made (with anger) for me on social media that renouncing some yards to hit more righteous ways applies to trading. My standard answer is that if their mini-driver can carry their driver, they should not seek to remove the driver from the bag. They need to replace the driver with a better one.
Tommy Fleetwood’s win at the Tour 2025 championship, and with it FedEx Cup, is a great example. Fleetwood is the most fruitful mini Golf driver user. He is essentially the face of mini driver exclusivity. But he too was able to make a difference in the configuration of his driver who allowed him to become more comfortable with him in high stress situations to gain the advantage of being closer to his approach. On Sunday at the Tour Championship, Fleetwood hit three shots with his driver that he had hit with a mini driver in 2024. You might say he had full confidence in the driver, and that he was using that comfort and power to his advantage to him Finally claim his first PGA Tour victory.
But it’s fun.
The reason for many players hit the segment of the driver so well is because the clubs Create an optimal start profile. Usually this is at a higher start and lower rotation compared to the driver due to the increase in the attic. Which brings me back to a point we did in Podcast with Lucas Bro: Most players hit the ball very low. The difference between a mini driver and a street wood is that the mini driver has a lower rotary profile, and you are shaking the club differently. Since you are filling the ball up with the mini, you will hit the ball slightly more, increasing the start and rotation over the road.
If you were going to get a player who prefers to hit the mini driver and put them on a driver who provided them with the same starting conditions, but at the club’s 3-4mp head speed faster, those players would give you all the money in their wallet. And that’s my point. that IS possible. There is a zero reason a player cannot achieve this. It may not be simple, and you definitely want to go to a qualified adapter, but if a player can feel pressured to exchange their driver for a mini driver they buy with a quarrel, investing a good fit for a proper driver should be a more intelligent.

Problems with slower speed
This is especially important for players who do not have a tone of speed. At lower speed, the gap between the mini driver and the driver is larger. The ball speed wins and the forgiveness of a full -sized driver should shine more. This is where it is necessary for these players not to give up on finding the right combination of the driver. Removes from speed and forgiving a larger package in full -sized driver would be meaningless. I understand the trauma brought by a driver with bad performance. We’ve all been there. But the distance descent is not worth sacrificing.
In PGA Tour, the number 1 player near the hole of 175-200 yards had an average proximity of 28 feet, 4 inches. By 125-150 yards, player number 1 had an average proximity of 19 ‘-4 “. This is a 9-foot change from approximately a two club advantage. Now, let’s put it in a placement perspective. 25 meters had a percentage made of 9.72%. Player number 1 on Puts from 15-20 meters had a percentage of 29.63%. This is a 20% chance to make your stack. Why would you remove it from yourself? I know, I know. Even as I write this, I can hear you saying, “But Jake, I can’t keep my driver on the planet.” And for that please again. Go to fit for a new driver.
Callaway Elyte mini driver
Characteristics and benefits at the top of the most forgiving and easier bag of bag to start than a road tree, the Elyte Mini Driver is a great alternative when precision outside is primary. A higher speed swing, lines can begin to blur, and this is where a player can choose to play a mini driver for a flight form preference than a performance change. Many players have chosen a mini driver as their traction club when a cut is their goal of choosing with the driver. This allows them to work the ball in both ways, and the equilibrium features can usually constitute the loss of distance they can see with the mini.
This is something I have tried for several months, in fact. I’m bad with the fairway woods, and I never really loved them from the deck, so a mini driver was perfect for me. I was hitting a nice little draw with my driver and I needed something I could form reliably left to the right, sometimes very aggressively, without worrying about a big spinny miss on the left. What I finished building was a Elyte mini 13.5-Degree, which I loft down and with weight back. In a short 42.5 inches, this made the job perfectly. I could open the club in my hands and swing left with a beautiful little cut. My home course is short and narrow, and there are some holes where the mini driver is invaluable. Holes where I still have only one wedge of sand in green.
Proper replacement
The last exchange we need to talk about is the exchange that must happen. The exchange of road wood. I am the perfect example of this. Until recently (yesterday, in fact) I was the worst wood player in the world. A 3-dawn was absolutely useless in my bag, so I had no hesitation in filling that slot with a mini driver. But finally I got up with the feeling that I was missing in a useful tool in my bag, so I added to a 4-tree and clicked things. It happened to be a club that performs a double role: Title GT280.
This “mini driver” 280cc is more of a “maxi wood” in my eyes. It is much easier to hit the deck than any of the other largest mini drivers on the market, and just as easy to hit by tee. I wouldn’t say as long as Taylormade, or as stable as Elyte, but it’s the best mix of all worlds. I really think having GT280 in my bag is what allowed me to get better in hitting the Fairway Woods in general, who, ironically, wounded by dedicating a place in my bag.

But if you can handle the slot in your bag, and you can justify having a steady secondary option with the ability to hit the deck in the odd chance you need, then I support this most. The title was very smart in this version. They gave the market another opportunity, and one more justifiable in that.
At the end of the day, your bag is made of 14 tools that everyone should do a job. If your number 2 tool is a mini driver, excellent. I love mini drivers. Big mini boy driver. Mini team driver all the way. But if it’s your number 1 tool, we have problems.
