Ryan Garcia says no one will have missed him when Devin Haney resumes his career because he’s on fans’ radar unless his father, Bill Haney, hypes him up.
Interestingly, Haney hasn’t already put up a fight to get back in the ring, because unlike Ryan, he hasn’t been suspended, and there’s no reason for him to sit inactive for long periods of time. It has been five months since Haney, 25, lost to Ryan on April 20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Haney will have to come back sooner or later. He can’t just wait for Ryan’s suspension to expire next April before fighting again, and he won’t be ready for the rematch if he chooses to take the risk of a second fight. If Haney wants to put fans’ doubts about him to rest, he needs to start fighting again and beat someone well.
His former promoter, Eddie Hearn, wants him to challenge IBF 140-lb champion Liam Paro in December in August, but that might not be a good idea. Unless the money is out of this world, Haney needs to focus more on a contender to fight in the US
“You had Devin Haney fight at the OC Fair (Orange County Fair). So when he returns to boxing, he will say: ‘Boxing missed me for three months.’ No one even knew you were gone. If your father doesn’t talk, nobody cares about you,” said Ryan Garcia on the Say Cheese YouTube channel about Devin Haney.
“Secondly, if at all, how are you going to fight a random citizen at the OC Fair and not get a knockout there? You can’t even knock out a civilian, let alone a professional fighter,” Ryan said.
Haney had an altercation at a recent Orange County Fair, and he was seen on video throwing a punch that appeared to miss someone. It’s unclear what happened that caused Haney to want to take a shot at the person, but it’s a good thing he didn’t lay him out.
The lingering impact of defeat
The loss last April seems to have taken something out of Haney, causing him to sit inactive and waste valuable time in his career. Haney’s former promoter, Eddie Hearn, believes he was physically and emotionally battered by the loss.
Devin’s father, Bill, takes tremendous interest in his fights, and he doesn’t talk; you wouldn’t even know Haney existed on this planet. Without Bill Haney talking to Devin, he is invisible.
