The fate of the Irish?
Surely looked that way this week as Rory Mcilroy celebrated St. Patrick Day Recording his second title of the player championship.
Meanwhile, far from the land of the TPC saw, there was much good luck to go around. It lay in an episode of Golf Podcast destinationWhere I have luck in a conversation with my co-perpetrator, Simon Holt, for the Golf glories on the island of Emerald.
In approximately the size of South Carolina, Ireland punches a lot over its weight in the game. Excellent courses can be found in Every corner of the country. To benefit from travel as much as possible, Holt recommends focusing on a region that limits the journey between Tee times and gives you abundant opportunities to soak the experience inside and outside the course.
In this conversation, we have trained our attention to the southwest, following Holt’s suggestions for the best places to play – and highlights to sleep and eat – in a regional departure. Here is a distillation of what we discussed about a golf dream trip to southwestern Ireland.
How to fly to southwestern Ireland
The pretty choice goes down to two shopping airports: Shannon and Dublin. While Shannon is closer to your target courses (it is about an hour by car in your first time, compared to approximately three hours from Dublin), Dublin welcomes more non -stop flights from the SH.BA as with many trips, the calculation revolves around cost and comfort. Not all travelers prioritize these factors the same way. Calculate the options and make your decision accordingly.
Taking around southwestern Ireland
What is true in Golf is worth traveling within Ireland. Distances can be misleading. Given the narrow roads, winding -wrings and weather vicissitudes, the discs can last longer than they appear on the map. For the unconstitutional players with the costs (and uncontrollabited by the fact that not all local players look kindness in the brave birds that are affected near the first tee), helicopters are a popular opportunity. But if you are staying with transport on the ground, Holt recommends hiring a driver who guarantees quiet trips while giving you the freedom to enjoy a pint or two after your round.
The best golf courses in southwestern Ireland
Mimets are approximate after conversion.
Trump International Golf Club – Doonbeg Resort ($ 465-575)
There is no ignorance polarizing elephant in the room. But leaving politics aside, Holt says Doonbeg makes a pleasant and pragmatic first stop at the region’s gate. The equipment here is Primo, and Greg Norman Design is a kind of palate excitement for the most classic connections they expect.
Lahinch Golf Club ($ 410)
Do not be fooled by the Modern Club Club. Designed by Alister Mackezie and a match in the Golf ranking of the 100 best courses in the world, Lahinch is a reversible golf in the best sense of the word, a pure connection full of official challenges, charming quartz, play the blind (here to blind.
Arg manorlor ($ 550)
When photographing golf in Ireland, a Parkland design by Tom Fazio is probably not the first course that comes to your mind. But Holt considers Adare Manor an indispensable for the quality of architecture and the shamelessness of the conditions, which are widely regarded as the best in the country. Given the five -star accommodations, Holt says property is also indispensable. Availability can be another matter. Starting in August, Adare Manor will start setting the boundaries in the tourist game as it begins preparations to host the 2027 Ryder Cup.
Ballbunion ($ 440)
Linked between the big dunes and the Atlantic, this magnificent connection was warned by the famous Golf writer Herbert Warren Wind as “nothing less than the best coastal course I have ever seen”. Tom Watson’s open champion would probably not cheat. He described Ballybunion as “one of the best and most beautiful connections everywhere.” This test begins with a medium-length Par-4 preserved from a cemetery to the right. You will not forget the cemetery. And yet, Holt says, it is in the 6th hole, as they present the curls through a coastal dune scap, which really begins to come to life.
trawl ($ 410)
The design loan here goes to the king, and although some members of Tralee have been known to question how much work the Arnold Palmer really decided in the country, there is no denial of regale results. The course starts quite scenic, with a front side sewn near the sea. But the back is where the drama is made with a heart, with heroic carriers and exciting holes cut along the Atlantic bluff that crashes around.
Old head ($ 520)
It is not often that you can stay in a box with tee and look down on the chicken that circulate below. But that’s how you go to Old Head, a course that should be seen to be believed (if you haven’t played it, you probably have pictures of her gawked), put a peninsula showing his wild finger in the Atlantic, with holes tightly cut along steep bluff about 300 meters in the waves.
Waterville ($ 385-410)
A car along the Kerry ring, the Irish-tank mountains to Big Sur California, leads you to the southwestern peak of the country in a club that was born in the late 1800s and has since been tweaked by modern architects. Even with those last touches, the layout bears a classic, wild and ruined appearance and feeling on a coastal path that is built towards a truly annoying conclusion. Waterville can be the perfect roof of your journey, but if you finish early and still have a scratch itching, consider stopping as you go back to Kerry ring for a round in dook, one of the oldest courses in the country and a sweet lid for a 36-day day.

Where to stay in southwestern Ireland
At the beginning of your journey, Holt recommends the bed down to Arg manorlorWhere the five -star appointments complement a predetermined course that will host the 2027 Ryder Cup. While moving to the southwest, Killarney is a city of storytelling in the city that is understood to attract its share of tourists. Housing in Killarney is not difficult to come. But among Holt’s Go are also Hotel Killarney Park and Hotel & Resort Europe, both located in the center with service and accommodation.
What to eat in southwestern Ireland
Among the many Irish golf clubs there is a quiet competition on which it whips the best fish bar. Holt Awards high marks in Chowder in Tralee, served with crumbly brown bread. But his favorite example is not offered in a course. Is a signature dish at Vaughans Anchor InnIn Liscannor, just down the road from Lahinch.
As for other meals, Holt calls to stop at Killarney: Pub laurels AND Gaby’s seafood. And in the city of Kinsale, on the way to the old head, do not remove a seafood party in a dining placed with a place called Fish -fish.
